Lactose Intolerance from pregnancy

Up until recently I never had any problem with dairy products of any kind, but NOW I get so much gas after I eat dairy. Obviously during pregnancy gas is common, but I get more after dairy consumption especially cheese. I've also noticed diarrhea when I've eaten too much of it as well. I don't want to give this up, but i don't know how much longer I want to deal with this. I don't like Lactaid or soy, rice, or almond milk. Those taste funny to me.

What can I eat? Or how can I better deal with this if I continue to eat dairy?

Re: Lactose Intolerance from pregnancy

  • I've had the opposite happen...my lactose intolerance diasappeared since I've been pregnant! You might want to discuss it with your doctor first, but if it is lactose intolerance and not a dairy sensitivity, you should be able to take lactaid pills or the generic kind...it's just the lactase enzyme in pill form that you take when you eat dairy.

  • I've been lactose intolerant since the day I was born.  My go to calcium drink is coconut milk, almond milk, or calcium fortified OJ.  (coconut milk is my fave for flavor but it has more fat/calories than the others. It is really good on cereal though!)   Greek yogurt has less lactose in it than traditional yogurt because of the different enzymes that they use to process it so that might be a good option for you to try as well.  I know for me, the further it is from pure milk, the easier it is on my system but I still have to watch my portions.  There is a lot of hidden dairy in stuff you wouldn't normally think to check in pre-prepped foods so check those labels too.
  • I'm lactose intolerant anyway. I can only eat hard, aged cheeses like aged Parmesan or Swiss. I drink and cook with coconut milk, it has the least odd flavor to me. If certain foods make you sick, quit eating them. That seems like common sense, no?
