switched formula, unusual stool, please help!

My 6 week old son has been on Emfamil Gentlease for about 2 days now. I do give him some EBM but he is mostly formula fed as my supply is very low. I switched from the newborn formula to gentlease because he seemed to have a lot of gassiness. Anyway today he REALLY strained to have a poop, more than he has before, and when he finally went it was really dark green, almost gray in color, and very thick, like potter's clay. After the thick stuff came out, he had a little bit of bright greenish/yellow runny poop that followed. After I changed his diaper and laid him down, he proceeded to spit up a bunch, which I suspect is just a little overfeeding as he didn't seem uncomfortable when spitting up. Just when he pooped. He's acting fine and normal now. Should I be worried about his poop color/texture? Anyone else have this happen when they switched formula? Any opinions or advice welcome. First time poster!

  • I'd see if you can get in touch with a doctor or nurse on call and ask them, if for no other reason just peace of mind. That's what I would do :)

  • I had to switch to soy formula (per the advice of my doctor).  DD's poop had been yellow and seedy and she was pooping a lot.  The first stool on her new formula was a thick dark green then changed color.  She also was pooping less and she seemed uncomfortable at times.  I was worried because it was such a change from before but my doc said everything was normal.  Now it's been 10 days on the new formula and I think her bowel habits are finally starting to even out.  They say to give new formula 2 weeks and that seems to be about what it has taken.
  • We too switched from Newborn Enfamil to Gentle Ease for the same reasons and our daughters stool sounds exactly the color and consistency of your sons.  I mentioned to the nurse that it was like a green/gray clay soft serve sort of a look and she said that's good!  Towards the end of some diaper changes, not all, she will shoot out that more watery grainy consistency poop so no worries!  She goes maybe once every day or day a half, which again they told me is normal and the reason it sounds like she's straining.  I guess it's because the baby gets the urge to push and at the same time, clenches their bum hole, getting all confused, causing the strain and gas.  You are doing everything right!  :)

  • Its not unusal for babies to sometimes have problems with pooping when they get switched to a new formula. You should still try and get ahold of the doc if you havent already. I had to put my ds2 on soy formula and now I have to give him juice every day if I want him to poop and he is only 9wks old. .
