An update on my Sam

Its been a while since I've updated on Sam. Mostly because for a while everything was going so well

Quick history: Some of you might remember at 2months old Sam was admitted to the hospital for bilateral pneumonia. It was quickly discovered Sam was unable to swallow correctly and was aspirating on his formula. After a battery of tests by 6months it was diagnosed as "Dysphagia due to unknown causes"  They weren't too concerned because of the fact he was developing normally in every other way. The intense pneumonia so young did cause his lungs to weaken, though, and he has asthma and was having sleep apnea episodes when sick.

He was matched with a speech therapist, who he now loves dearly, was placed on a thickener, and was on an apnea monitor at night.

He was later unofficially diagnosed as having SPD (sensory processing disorder) which is known to cause dysphagia. He was scheduled for an assessment through EI to confirm or dispute the diagnosis. They pulled out stating 12m was too young for an assessment and we were to reschedule at 18m.

Where we are now: We were slowly doing great. Sam was progressing faster than anyone expected. We originally weren't going to move him from a bottle at 12m because he had just started to perfect drinking from it but our speech therapist felt he was ready and by 12months he was on a sippy cup except when he was tired. He had an advanced vocabulary (10+ words) and could sign half a dozen others.

Shortly after his birthday Sam began regressing. He began aspirating what he drank from the sippy cup, has been hospitalized twice (just one overnight each) due to asthma attacks, and his apnea monitor log has shown more apnea episodes than we were aware of. He also began losing words.

Now at 15months he only uses 1 word (mama). We attempted a switch back to bottles but he refused to drink so we thickened his drinks even more.

Because of all this he is being evaluated by EI in a few weeks and our doctors want us to do an MRI.

The good news: I've been reassured this could very likely be a fluke, a bizarre setback. it's illness season which could be causing him to get sick (causing the asthma, aspiration and apnea). And we did have the baby 2 months ago so he could just be having a natural regression of speech in reaction to him.

Sam is still very normal in physical development he walks and runs well, his growth is great (15mo he is 32.5 inches and 25lbs 14oz). He still laughs like crazy at his sister, he loves the baby and tries to help, he still loves to cuddle with me all day. There are more moments in which he is perfectly normal than there are doctors appointments, tests, and therapy. And these things are what I'm holding onto right now.
