July 2013 Moms

Not having blood work is killing me!!

So, I have to admit something...I'm REALLY jealous of those of you who have had blood work already. I know, it's silly. But, I think having blood work results would give me some indication of how things are going, you know? I am having the same "crampy pain" like I had last time, so I guess that's pretty good. I know it's all up to God and trusting his plan (yes, I'm very religious) but it's also nice to have the science behind it too!

I know I'm venting...sorry. Just feel a little frustrated that all I have to go on is 3 very clear BFPs! haha

Thanks for listening!

A little bit about me...

Re: Not having blood work is killing me!!

  • I was shocked that my doctor did them for me. I have not had any prior losses.

Maybe call and see if they will do them?

  • To be honest, I'd give anything to go back to that place where I didn't need blood work done. Most of the women who are having betas and progesterone checks have prior losses or dealt with IF. I never had any blood work done with my first pregnancy and it was just fine. The waiting is tough for everyone, but your first ultrasound will be here before you know it. Try not to be too jealous of all of us getting blood work done. It probably means we've been through something you've been lucky enough to avoid.

    Umm, THIS.

Blood work/betas are NOT standard/normal for most pregnant women because it isn't needed.

    Yes

Yep. I would love to live in a happy no beta world because that would mean that I never had to go through a miscarriage.

Really?  Good for your doctor for refusing to do an unnecessary test.  Being impatient doesn't mean you *need* a test done....or done over and over again.

I'll HAPPILY trade ever single one of you my 2.5 years of TTC, the 1.5 years of treatments, tests, needles, pills, tears, bloodwork, and bills for groaning and "being killed" by not having b/w.  In all honesty ladies, BE THANKFUL you DON'T need it!  Guess what--I've had b/w drawn 3 times and it doesn't help me feel more comfortable.  Instead I get to stress over my numbers, how much they've risen, are they high enough, etc.

She's had a loss. At least one. I felt a whole lot more comfortable with my blood drawn because at least I knew things were progressing. My number doubled and that gave me a sense of relief. I wish it had done the same for you.

  • I was pretty surprised mine did it for me. Last time they did a urine test. Even though they did do the bloodwork this time, they didn't tell me what my betas were.

Maybe call and see if you can push to have the labwork done?

  • I am very sorry for anyone who's had a loss or issues TTC. My doctor just said it was necessary for their office before they schedule me for future appointments. I have not had a loss, that's just their protocol.

I had a friend m/c this year and I have two very dear friends dealing with PCOS right now so I certainly don't understand (how could I), but you can bet I am hoping sticky babies for everyone!

unless you plan on apologizing to me about how awful you were to me I don't see how it matters.

I will never understand what the last 2.5y have been like for you but that doesn't mean some people can't find comfort in things you don't. We don't know what it's like to have to go through as much as you have but you haven't had a loss. They both suck but they are very different experiences. I wouldn't wish to have your experience but I truly hope you never have to have mine either.

    Guess that answers my question.

As I said in my reply to you, that's great seeing numbers doubled for you made you feel better--I mean it.  However, as we both said we have different perspectives on things.

  • This is my first pregnancy and the only reason they did blood work on me is because I have no idea of my due date. I had gone to the doctors twice during my 80 something day cycle. My Dr. ordered tests to check if I was ovulating and some other issues and sure enough I o'ed on my own at CD 75 and conceived. Problem was my last period was Aug 1st and they put me at 12 weeks which I knew was not true. First ultrasound confirmed I was not 12 weeks, so they checked my hcg level. The blood work did make me feel a lot better, but if you have no severe cramping or spotting I would say you're safe. Good luck!

Honestly, don't worry about it. I think everyone was just explaining. You're more than welcome to come and vent here. Part of that, though, is sometimes getting responses like you did today; explaining why someone has a different protocol than you.

Shrug it off. Having been on TB for awhile, I can tell you, this isn't a fight. Smile

I don't think anyone is really fighting, just explaining why things are different for you like pp said. Just find something to keep yourself busy until your first ultrasound....I think we are all holding our breath to see the heartbeat! Another perspective though is I had doubling betas early in my last pregnancy and still miscarried. I'm not getting that into my betas...I've been far more concerned about my progesterone, which was an issue last time.

  • ONe thing I've learned through the process of TTC is that you are ultimately in charge of the healthcare you receive. For me, I had to research and go to a few different drs until I saw eye to eye with one. If you feel in your heart that blood work would give you peace of mind, then remember you're in charge. Those drs wouldn't have a job without you. Their job is to take care of and listen to you, and do what's best.  Good luck with everything and don't let fear replace faith! :)
