Cloth Diapering

stains

So we've been cloth diapering for all of a couple weeks and we use BG 4.0s. I have yellow/newborn poop stains on the inside of each one she's pooped in! I've read that with this or that wash system folks have no stains left. I wash every third day, and I first do a cold water rinse. Then I do a hot water wash with charlie's soap powder, with an extra rinse.

The first time I washed them I did a hot water wash with soap, and then a cold water wash with extra rinse. They came out the same amount of clean in terms of not smelling whether or not I did the second wash with cold water... and they still had stains after doing that.

What am I doing wrong? These things are going to look awful after a couple years or a couple kids if this is the norm. :(

Re: stains

  • Just dry them outside in the sun or on a drying rack in front of a window and the sun will get rid of any stains.

Could this happen at any point or will it only work for fresh stains? I'm curious if this is something we would do each spring/summer but not so much in the fall and winter as it's cold. Which you said it works through a window too, seriously?!

  • It works at any point, but I imagine works best on stains that haven't been set in the dryer.

I have never sunned my diapers outside, always in a window with the blinds pulled up.

  • It should work any time. We have no outdoor space, so I didn't bother sunning my newborn stash until it was time to pack them away for the next baby. Two months worth of stains came out in a few hours of window drying. I sunned prefolds, fitters, and BG AIOs and they all came out spotless.

    Oh, yay! Good to know.

  • I would also suggest doing your wash every two days instead of three.  And, do a good rinse to clean off all the poo (in the toilet with rubber gloves), and then rinse in scalding water in the sink to really get all the stains out right away.  Then the wash plus sun should do the trick.

  • The sun is magic. I do my laundry every 3 days as well and with the cold weather coming, I've been drying inside instead of out. Just keep them away from the dryer (and save the money too) and find the sun when you can. I had heard putting them in the window works (I have not tried it) but its good to hear that it is working for other people!!
