We use one of DS's teachers for a sitter as well. I usually pay her a few dollars above the "going" rate in the area, which is $12-15 per hour. I am always afraid that if I don't go above the market rate, we will get a bad rep at daycare!
We pay ours $10/hr. Although the last 2 times we've been out for about 5hrs each, and since the ATM only gives us $20s, she got $60. So, that ends up about $12/hr, plus we gave her $20 to order pizza.
$10/hr is the going rate here. The college student who works at our daycare said she has done anywhere from $8-10, but we'd already had another daycare employee babysit for $10 so it seemed like we should pay her the same.
Thanks! And, I certainly will pay more than the "going rate" so that not only will I keep a good rep at school, but that she'll want to come to sit again!
It really depends on where you live. I live in a semi-higher col area and for 1 kid I paid $8/hr and for 2 I pay $15. But in NYC when we lived there, for 1 kid I paid $15/hr.
Recently did this myself and learned average for nyc metro (nj) under same circumstances -woman from daycare- average was 15-18/hour for 2 kids. We paid her 20 an hour for one mostly self-sufficient child (I put the baby to sleep before we left). So I guess she got a good deal but I really appreciated her giving up a Sat night after spending all week taking care of little ones!
We also hire a college girl from daycare to sit for us occasionally. We give her $12/hour, though I know she'd do it for a lot less. In fact, I'm pretty sure she'd do it for free because she loves DS so much. Daycare pays minimum wage to the "non-teacher" helpers, so she's doing much better babysitting.
Ours charges $10 per hour but we usually round up to the nearest $20 (always at least a $10 tip). This past weekend we were gone for 4.5 hours and gave her $60.
And we always have something (pizza usually) ready for her dinner.
