PMP anyone?

Has anyone become PMP certified and do you feel it was worthwhile? How long did it take with studying and test taking?

ETA: Sorry, should have added PMP = project management professional. It's a certification.

Re: PMP anyone?

  • I can't help with the PMP cert either but just wanted to say "Hi Bree and cute babies!". I've been lurking over here in preparation for becoming a working Mom in the near future. Hope all is well with you!

Hi! Thank you. I am SO excited for you. I think I said it on GBCN, but congrats again!

My original due date was May 11th. It's nice to avoid being pregnant during the hottest months of the year.

    Morning sickness any better yet?

  • I don't have a PMP but I work for a government contractor and I know that is something that is a positive for a candidate. Since the course is expensive you have to be recommended by your manager to take it here. I say it's a plus! I know that with other certs in this industry (IT/defense related) managers will often pay higher for them. Saves the company money in the end to not have to pay for training.

  • Breezy - So you have twins with different birthdays!? That's kind've cool. :)
  • katieh1017 - thank you. That's kind of what I've been hearing. A client I work with has mentioned they are encouraging their project managers to become certified.

cedenton - yes they do! Baby A was born at 9:44pm and baby B was born at 12:02am. I was told by a nurse that she had only seen it one other time in 20+ years. I think it will be neat for them to have their own day.

  • My husband is a pmp He got the books, glanced over them one Saturday afternoon and took the test and passed. He was planning to leave his company and they paid for everything so he thought why not. He thinks it's sorta a pain now because he has to take so many credits every few years to remain certified.

I am also a pm, but haven't taken the test because my company doesn't care about it and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. If I ever start to think about leaving, I'll take the test.

Many people at my client site that I work with have taken it. One took a week long prep class and failed. Another person, reviewed the books for a few days and passed.

  • It depends on how much weight your company puts on it. Some companies like to bid contracts and state that a certain % of their employees have it so they will pay more. I opted not to get it because I have an MBA and several years of experience and at a certain point worried about being seen as over qualified aka: too expensive. I have not found not having it to be a detriment to my career so far.
