Nbr iCloud almost full and not sure how to fix settings...

I got an email that my iCloud is almost full...I want to change e settings so it doesn't back up my apps and documents ( I would think apps and books take up a lot of space and since they're in my amazon acct and also on my computers iTunes, it see,s silly to have on iCloud?)... But when I try to turn that setting of on my iPad it says it is going to delete everything off the iPad that was synced with iCloud....what the heck...?

 

Anyone familiar with this?
