s/o words--pronunciation

I wonder what you all count as words if they can't say them properly?  For example, DD says "wa" whenever she sees a flower (I think she is trying to say the "wer" part).  If someone else heard her, obviously they wouldn't understand her, but she uses it consistently and definitely knows what it means.  Do you consider that a word?  (Not that it matters that much, I just wonder how others think of it)

Re: s/o words--pronunciation

  • I wouldnt. Bell says Bun instead of bunny. I know what she wants but wouldn?t count it as a word. She's a babbler, always chatting but only says a handful of proper words. Also instead of asking for milk she just says refill, which is cute but i we will eventually have to get her to say the correct words.

  • Yes, I consider that a word. DD is obsessed with cheese and asks for it all the time. She says, "eeeeees". She 100% means it.

  • Yes. Any sound (that is consistent) definitely counts, imo. I used to teach and my mom used to do speech and language with infants-age5, and they/she told us that any sound used consistently with meaning counts as a word. However, if they cannot pronounce the words correctly at age 5, then they generally start speech classes. However, our kids are still just learning, so I'm not concerned at all. LO says "ish" for fish, "bum" for balloon, etc. I know exactly what she is saying and she's always pronounced it the say way.

LOL DD loves cheese too.  She says "cheeeee!!!!"

  • Yes, our pedi counts anything consistently used for something as a word. (it's more about them having speech pathways and understanding how to apply labels, not about correct pronunciation)

She says "waa-er" for water, "poo poo" for diaper, a clucking noise for kitty, "wah wah" for quack quack, shhhsssss for cheese, and i noticed last night she's constitently saying "kuh" for book, like she's overly pronouncing just the k part of it or saying it backwards or something.

if none of those count, dada doesn't either Wink

  • Our pedi said any "repeated utterance" is considered a word. DS has about 50 words, but maybe only a dozen or less that *everyone* would understand. DH and I understand the others because we've been able to put it together in context. "Ba pa" is backpack and DS will remind me if I forget his backpack in the morning :)

  • Yep I count it.  Pedi said even if it isn't recognizable to anyone else and long as it is really a word/sound whatever that she is making to correspond to a specific thing it is a word.

  • YES!! If it has a meaning, and she can communicate it to you, it's a word in my mind.

  • When I'm doing a language sample as a speech-language pathologist, anything the child uses with meaning gets counted. I'd say, if "wa" is consistently "flower" for your DD, it's a word.

DS often says "ess" instead of "yes," but he clearly means to say "Yes." It's still a word for him.

  • I count it as a "word" when:

    - DD uses it on her own.

    - It sounds reasonably close to the actual word.

    - AND She repeats it.
