24 hour urine collection - did you pass?

Sorry if this was discussed elsewhere. Nothing came up in my search.

I had high blood pressure yesterday on my BP cuff I have at home, so I went to L&D to be checked out. I also went to L&D last week due to a high reading at an appointment. While at L&D my blood pressure returned to normal both times and my blood work looks great. However there's more protein in my urine this week. So they're keeping me in the hospital overnight for a 24 hour collection.

My question is for anyone who has done the 24 hour collection. Did your results come back normal or not? I have no idea how often people pass/fail. If you failed, did everything else look ok except the high protein? Or did you definitely have other pre-e symptoms?

If I don't pass the 24 hour they're going to keep me in the hospital through the birth to keep an eye on me. Since LO has heart issues they don't want to induce right away if they don't have to. I may be here for a few weeks (induction currently scheduled for the 17th).

For mobile bumpers, I'm 37 weeks today.

Re: 24 hour urine collection - did you pass?

  • I went through this last pregnancy. I had high BP readings with trace protein and CRAAAZY swelling at dr appts. Was sent to L &D twice. BP always went down with good blood work and I was sent home. The last time I went, I had to do 24 hr collection. I ended up passing--there was protein but not enough. However, that day, my blood work was awful indicating I had developed severe pre-e with HELLP syndrome. They delivered me at 35 weeks, but bc of HELLP. I think otherwise they would have monitored me further. Im not sure at 37 weeks.....they may deliver you? Might depend on your dr and how high your BP/protein levels are. Good luck!

  • Thanks @jg1011‌. I'm hoping for good results. I don't think the doctor is expecting me to pass.

  • Yes I have been dealing with this most of my pregnancy. I have had high readings at several appointments and when I had the blood work done something signaled possible pre e. I then had to do the 24th our urine and everything came back fine! Try not to stress about it. Your in good hands with your Drs!!
  • I did not pass. My levels were 345 and the cut-off for my OB is 300. I had been placed on bed rest the day before and I was induced the day I hit 37 weeks. Good luck!

  • I had been having slightly high (140/90) bp for weeks that would go down at the end of my appt. My last appt it shot up to 156/103, so my doctor sent me to L and D to have it monitored. It leveled off but not enough. So I had to do the urine test.

I barely failed it at 300. I was induced the next day at 37 weeks and 2 days.

The high bp and protein in the 24 he test were my only symptoms. I never even had traces of urine at any of my appointments.

Good luck! Hope the results are what you want!

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies.  I won't find out until later today what the test results are and the doctor's decision.  Since LO has a complex CHD, they really don't want to induce earlier than 39 weeks if they can help it so he/she is big enough for surgery after birth.  I really want LO to cook a little while longer.

  • I had some swelling/dizziness/and elevated BP a couple appointments ago. I got sent up to L&D for monitoring and was held captive by contractions I didn't know I was having... but my BP dropped back into happy levels so they released me.  They had me do the 24 hour collection and they weren't happy with my results, things were "elevated" but they weren't elevated enough to do anything about them.

I'm a little bit stabby at this point over the phrase "elevated levels" and being told that things are "elevated" because although my office is good at running the lab work they are not so good at communicating what the lab work means, or even being specific about what your results are. I have an appointment today because I got sick Monday evening and ended up in L&D and all they saw were "elevated levels."  Of what?? I dunno guess I'll find out when I go in today for a special appointment that they were super cryptic about making with me.

Good luck with yours though! I hope you get good results or at the very least there is a good clear plan of attack with problems that may arise!

  • Best of luck to you ladies doing the 24-hour.  My OB is out of town this week, but I saw my results online.  They were slightly below 300, but double what they were 2 weeks ago.  Since I'm scheduled to deliver this Friday anyway at 38 weeks, I think everyone is in wait and see mode.  Even if you do have pre-e, there are ways your doctor can manage it while keeping your baby in longer.  Early delivery is a last resort.

  • Well, I failed.  My protein level was 328.  Looks like I'm staying in the hospital until they decide to induce.  I hope you had better results @monicavickery.

  • At least you'll be monitored closely and that means a better outcome for you and baby! I'm sorry you're going to be held captive though, I hate being in the hospital.

  • I'm actually happy that I'll be here and monitored, even though I know I'll be bored out of my mind most of the time.  It's a comfort to be near the doctors and the Children's hospital.  I know I'm in good hands.  I'm hoping the doctors give me good news on how long they think I'll be able to last before being induced.  I'd love to make it to my original induction date (39 weeks) if possible.

  • I have had preeclampsia with both pregnancies and with both I have had way too much protein in my urine (3+). The 24 hour collection is just to look at your urine in more detail versus the samples you do in the doctor's office. With DS they delivered him at 38 weeks after the collection and I've been high risk with LO this entire pregnancy to watch for preeclampsia...I've had to do several 24 hour collections this pregnacy and my protein is always elevated but my bloodwork is fine so im still scheduled for a c-section for the 16th. Hopefully everything is ok but if not I'm sure you are in good hands!
