Cloth Diapering

Hemp or bamboo prefolds?

DH and I are finally ready to go 100 cloth. This is out first LO. We have started with 12 gerber cotton prefolds that LO soaks through quickly and leaks. We are thinking of staying with prefolds so i was thinking of hemp or bamboo. We are on a tight budget and want to get used to save money. Our family and friends think we are nuts for doing this... Where are the best places to look for used hemp or bamboo prefolds for sale? Any other suggestions are welcome too! Thanks!!

Re: Hemp or bamboo prefolds?

  • Your first mistake was using Gerber prefolds. Those things are crap and weren't meant for actual diaper use, just burp cloth use. I wouldn't bother with the bamboo or the cotton prefolds. Just get some nice good indian cotton prefolds. WE like brands like Imagine, Osocozy, and Green Mountain Diapers. Try some of those cotton prefolds. They were meant to be peed in.

  • DItto on the gerber prefolds, don't use them. I prefer bamboo prefolds now that DD is older and peeing more. If you wanted to use them longer term I would definitely buy hemp/bamboo over cotton. I was a tester for the new grovia bamboo prefold and I LOVE IT and can't wait to buy more. They will be on the market next month!

  • No need to go all out with hemp or bamboo. They are nice, but if $$ is an issue real cotton prefolds are awesome and much more affordable. A hemp prefold costs about $8 each. A good quality cotton prefold in the size you would need is about $2-3.

As PP said, Gerber are not real cotton prefolds. The 'absorbent' pad is 100% polyester, which is crazy since polyester isn't very absorbent. I'm surprised they've worked at all this long for you.

Cotton Babies (www.cottonbabies.com) sells Premium Sized Indian cotton prefolds for $2 each with free shipping on any size order.

Order a couple of those to try out. Wash them 4-5 times with your whites or towels before using them on your kiddo. I swear they will blow away the Gerber diapers.

It's a little harder to find used prefolds in the larger sizes (15+ pounds) but I've gotten some on ebay and craigslist. I have Green Mountain prefolds, but any kind that is truly 100% cotton with 4x8x4 layers is going to be great.

  • The reason we have been thinking of hemp and bamboo is because the cotton gerber prefolds we are using now haven't been working as well as I would like. DH seems fine with them. If the issues is that the quality is not that great than we will definitly look at other cotton prefolds. We really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars.

What other places are good for buying cotton prefolds besides cottonbabies and Green Mountain?

  • It really is a quality issue with the Gerbers. They just don't have the absorbency.

Green Mountain diapers are very popular, but there are definitely other less expensive (but still excellent quality) cotton prefolds out there. Other good brands of prefolds & where to buy:

Imagine Prefolds: Sold online at Nickis Diapers. $75 minimum order to qualify for free shipping, though

Diaper Rite prefolds: Sold at Diaper Junction. $49 minimum order for free shipping.

OsoCozy: Sold at Amazon, Jillians Drawers and Kellys Closet

Bummis: Sold at Amazon, Diapers.com, Nickis Diapers, Cotton Babies, and probably many others.

  • ditto what PP said: Gerber prefolds are really only best used for burp cloths. I use OsoCozy prefolds and love them. I purchased them on Amazon. They are much thicker, but did need about 8 washes to prep them... or 30 minutes of boiling them. I bought 2 hemp prefolds and was disapointed how difficult it was to put them on baby. A snappi just does not work on them, so I had to fold them and leave them loose in the cover (not ideal for me). But they are more absorbent... Now I do my OsoCozy cotton prefolds with an extra wool pocket insert added to them. The insert keeps baby dry and helps add a bit of absorbency.
I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!

  • I have purchased a lot of my stash thru diaperswappers.com. I haven't had any issues with anyone stiffing me. I have used Paypal for all of my purchases. Pretty easy to do. If you are looking for Preloved then you could give that a try.
