circumcision question...

I was changing DS today when my brother said that I'm supposed to pull DS skin back at each diaper change so that the skin doesn't reattach itself. My nephew had to get his redone again because my brother hadn't been doing that.

My pedi has never told me this. All I was doing was pulling the skin back during baths. Do you pull your LO's skin back during each diaper change?

Re: circumcision question...

  • My pedi never told me anything about that. I've never done it until 2 nights ago after reading something about it. DS didn't seem to have an reattachment issues.

  • I have always heard people say that is a myth and that you don't need to do that. I never did that with DS1 and never had an issue. I only do it every once in awhile during baths.

  • Never done it because pedi never mentioned it. I will be asking during my 4 month appt though
  • huh?  never heard of that.  I guess I don't have to worry about it right now as DS isn't going to have his circumcision until January.  I hope someone asks their pedi and posts the answer on here!

  • I had never heard of it either, and in fact my nicu nurses told us that when we took DS home not to touch it at all. But when I tood DS to his 2 month checkup the doctor took a look at him and said that we should be pulling the foreskin back at each diaper change to make sure it stays clean, and during bathtime so the warm cleansing water can help keep it clean. His was just starting to re-attach when it was caught at the 2 month mark. We didn't have to do a re-circ, but the doctor did pull apart what was starting to grow back together and he put some salve on it and he was fine...no pain. It just looked horrible like it did when he was first circ'ed. His penis should have a nice ridge all the way around it...if you don't see that when you pull his skin back you might want to ask your doctor about it.

  • My pedi told my to make sure this isnt happening. I dont do it every diaper change, but I do it everyday. I was doing it before he told me, but just to make sure he was really clean- so it didnt change our routine

  • My ped said at his 2 month appt to just do it at bath time

  • Is this only for circumcised boys? We elected not to have DS circumcised, but our pedi told us at the 1 mo. appt. to gently pull his foreskin back ever so slightly in the bath to clean out the smegma. It terrifies me though so I only do it about once a week. I've read you should never pull an uncircumcised baby's foreskin back at all though so now I'm confused.

  • I just got back from my son's 4 month appt and the dr. pulled my son's skin back. He said we had to pull it back everyday because the skin is trying to reattach itself. When he did it he said it would hurt the baby a little bit but my little guy was a trooper and only made a fussy face for a second. It did look pretty red/purple when the dr pulled it back. I don't know if that's normal or not but I am going to try pulling it back once a day.

Yes, only for circumcised boys. I guess uncirced boys need to pull it back to clean, but circumcised boys need to pull the skin back to clean and so that the skin does not reattach.
