Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Hips don't lie

So I was 155lbs and size 7 jeans before pregnancy. I've lost all the baby weight and then some, 150lbs now. However I just went to get new jeans for the first time since baby was born and I couldnt even get size 7 past my hips. Couldn't get size 9 past my hips. So it was size 11 being the only one I could get up, but they fit a little baggy everywhere else. I've always had big hips, but since giving birth they seem to be SO much wider.

Anyone else experience this? Will they go back to how they were?

When I came home feeling bummed my husband said we should just go back to the store where we got the ones with a stretchy waistband aka maternity jeans. Haha. I don't know why we don't all, just where those all the time! They are cute and aside from the band you can't tell they are maternity.

Re: Hips don't lie

  • because of my hips post birth, i am 2 sizes bigger even though im 8 pounds from my pre-preg weight... idk if my hips will go back. all i can suggest is exercise to try and compensate.

  • You are not alone! I am a size bigger despite being back to pre-preg weight... I can put my old pants on but they dont fit the right way. I personally feel like my weight is distributed differently now (more in the hip area) than before. I also think that the actual hip bones are spread wider now.

  • Does the postpartum hip shrinker from babies r us work? I'm curious myself.
  • With my first baby, around month 4 post partum, my hips miraculously went back to pre pregnancy status. It took that long, but it did happen. I don't think you can do much but let your body work thru the natural process. It was a gradual shift to expand and the return is also a slow process. Be gentle with yourself!

That gives me hope : it feels pretty much out of my hands because it doesn't look like a weight thing, like pp said, it's like the bones are literally just spread more. Patience it is.

This happened to me too, only it took about 6months post partum. I wouldn't throw out your old clothes just yet, they may fit eventually, GL!

  • My ob said it takes at least 12 weeks for hips to START shifting into place. It took 9 months for them to end up where they are, it will take a while for them to shift back, unfortunately!!

  • Maybe try buying your jeans in regular (not juniors) sizes.  Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the odd sizes (5, 7, 9, 11) are generally juniors are are not cut to accommodate more mature hips.  If you go to actual women's sizes (6, 8, 10, 12) you will usually find they are cut to accommodate curvier hips.  You may need to look in either a different department or a different store altogether.
  • I was in the same boat a few weeks post-partum...below my pre-baby weight, but none of my pants fit.  Then one day, about a week before I went back to work, they magically fit again! I'm not saying it's a guarantee, but have hope! :)
