From every 3 hours to our schedule

Ok. So how did you go from the NICU every 3 hour schedule to your own schedule? and what is your schedule?

Our feedings are 12 - 3 - 6 - 9 so we were thinking the first step is maybe to move the 3am to a 4am and maybe the 6am to a 6:30am and see if he can handle that.... than maybe move the 12am to 11pm and the 9pm to an 8:30pm and see if he can handle that but Im not even sure when to start trying.

How old was your lo when you started adjusting times?

Our LO is a month old but he still hasnt even reached his due date... which is in two weeks.

Re: From every 3 hours to our schedule

  • We feed on demand. The NICU had him on 12-3-6-9 and he would be hungry before the full 3 hours. When we got him home we'd feed him when he wanted and it was about every 2.5-3 hours. It's gradually gotten longer between feeds as he's gotten bigger/taken more. He's up to about every 3.5 hours with a long stretch in the early morning of 4-5 hours.

  • We did on-demand when we brought her home.  However, she had to eat a certain amount within a 24-hour period and not go more than 4 hours without eating.  We didn't have to wake her often, and when we did it was usually in the early morning hours.

She always ate a LOT more in the afternoons/evenings than in the morning.  I remember how worried I was at around 11am or 12pm noon when I thought she wouldn't make her quota.  However, as DH said, she would kick it into high gear and cluster-feed in the evenings.

  • We moved to on demand feeding as soon as she came home, she kept herself on the nicu 4 hr schedule for about 2 wks before DD changed it up on her own. She goes about 3.5 hrs between feedings with a long stretch at night up to 6 hrs. They let you know when they are hungry, and you can always have the pedi check your los weight or weigh at home to make sure they are gaining properly. I periodically check my weight then mine dds combined weight to get an idea of where she is just to know, but it also helps keep track between drs appointments.

  • He's been home for about 19 hours and from minute one, he decided to abandon his NICU feeding schedule. He was on 8, 11, 2, 5 but now he's on demand. He went about every two hours after Breastfeeding and every three hours after fortified BM. I'm sure they're all different though!

  • LO was eating every 2-2.5 hrs when she left the NICU.  They encouraged on demand feeding and we still do that.  She's 7 weeks adjusted 3.5 months actual and she still eats on demand, but it's more like 3-3.5 hrs during the day and 4-7 hrs at night depending on the night.  We don't have certain times for feedings we just go on her schedule.
