Postpartum constipation help

Any advice? DS was born on Friday and it has been since then. Had a csection so am still taking Percocet which I know is the culprit. I have taken colace, miralax and stool softener. I can't really eat anymore bc I am so backed up.

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Postpartum constipation help

  • Not sure, I had mine on Sunday vaginally, and my doctor said not to expect anything for a while... I thought with csections they kept you in the hospital until you went? That might be very outdated...

  • I thought the same too, had to stay till I went, but nope I was discharged less than 48 hours after my section. I believe you just have to "pass gas". Nurse said it could be a couple of days, drink, drink, drink and take the colace and it would happen. Maybe you could try a heating pad? Or foods that cause you to go, prune juice, etc.

  • I have no idea if it would be recommended by your doc, but I'm using fiber powder in my water bottles for 3rd tri constipation.  It's working wonders for me.

  • I had a csection and it took me 7days to have a bowel movement. I took all of the stool softeners and even the white milky stufflittle shot of something I can't remember the name twice in the hospital. Continued prunes and Metamucil at home. I was on pain pills too. It just takes a minute sometimes is what I was told. I would say I drank 3 doses of Metamucil in one day and I think that helped. Be warned tho, the 1st one was no joke.
  • I did not have a BM until 7 days pp, I also had a c- section and my doctor told me as long as I was passing gas that they would not worry until no BM and 12 days pp.

  • Drink some coffee. That always helps me keep things moving.

  • I have tried coffee. I joked with DH that I should have Mexican or Indian for dinner. :

I had this issue after having DD but not to this extreme, or at least that I remember. Ugh.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Keep yourself hydrated, drink lots of water and juice. In the hospital the nurses were forcing me to drink a lot to help soften the stool. Also, I took 2 stool softeners/day for the first month PP. One at breakfast, one in between lunch and dinner.

Try to eat things you know will help you go: salads, fruits, coffee, etc.

    Good luck!

  • I had the same problem after my csection.   I took mirilax daily and ended up using a glycerin suppository once to get things moving because I was so backed up it was seriously painful.  After that continued with the mirilax for a few more days and everything got much better.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't have a c/s but I still take a stool softener daily. For the first few weeks I actually took 2 of them 3 or so times a day and it was GREAT. They expected me to be fine on 2 a day... I tried telling them that I was taking 3 per day at the end of pregnancy and it wasn't doing much, but they just shrugged. So I did my own thing when I got home. 2 of them 3 times a day, and I had no poo problems.

Colace, by the way. I would be a bit more iffy on taking extra of anything else. And Costco has a bottle of 400 of their store brand for only $6!

  • Definitely keep taking that Colace and drink tons of water!  I had my first post c-section BM about a week after.  Thanks to all the Colace, it was not scary.
