I was talking to my friend this weekend and she was telling me how excited she was be picking up her new iPhone 5. I was a little surprised since she had been telling me over the previous months how little money she had, how she's a single mom on limited income, how she wasn't going to be able to pay for her daughter's private school (she teaches there otherwise her daughter wouldn't go), etc. Yes, priorities are very gray >.>
ANYWAYS! It got me thinking. My husband and I have just basic phones since we've never been able to afford the $150/mo for smartphones and data plans. It's not that we're hurting for money; we just try to save as much as we can. But it makes me wonder...are we the only ones with dumb phones?? That even people who are hurting for money can pay for data plans? (I know I just answered my question in my question). But I have to ask!

Re: Am I the only one with a dumb phone? (CP)
I don't like paying $150/mth for DH's and my smartphones, but I LOVE my iPhone and I use it ALL the time. I have an app for everything! LOL My iPhone was a lifesaver when DD was first born and having 3-hour BFing sessions! I used to play scrabble and words with friends at 3am just to keep myself awake
ETA: Can you tell how excited I am about smartphones? There's an exclamation point after almost every sentence I just realized. Oops....

I pay $60/month for my iPhone, but I don't have unlimited text/data/whatever. I've never gone over my limits, though. I think when I had a "dumb" phone I was paying $45, so the difference is waaaaay worth it to me. I love my iPhone.
DH gets his phone paid for by work, so that helps, of course.
With AT&T, you get a really big discount on new phones when you sign up for a 2 year contract. Maybe that's how she got the Iphone with out much money?
I have a dumb phone right now...
But I just started a 2 year contract with DH, and ordered a smartphone.
It's coming by UPS tomorrow, and I'm super excited. It's an HTC One X
I really can't wait. It was $50 instead of $500.
I know the iPhone 5 starts at $200 with a new contract, so I'm just assuming that's how much she paid. Regardless, smartphone plans are just expensive! I have an iPod Touch that has been working for me so I have no need of a smartphone besides just having something outside the house. But we do need to upgrade our phones and the basic phones kind of stink...
Both DH and I have dumb phones. We only just reinstated texting a few years ago after having it shut off for a couple years (DH insisted it ruined social skills...and I think he's kinda right). I had to talk him into getting one with a keyboard because he still wanted a basic flip phone. But when he saw they were the same price, he "upgraded" lol! My touch screen is an upgrade for me too. (We are lame! lol)
They tried to talk us into paying more per month and then our smart phones would be free. But why would we do that when we already pay a boatload for our internet bundle at home and I have my laptop and he his ipod? When we are at home we stare at our devices all day. When we get out - we actually talk to each other. Our dumb phones keep our relationship fresh haha!

I had a dumb phone until my 1st DD was born. I realized that with a baby I never had time to check my email especially with going back to work. So I got a smart phone then so I could check email and facebook whenever. However I get a decent discount on ATT through work, so my monthly plan is about $60 which isn't too bad (it was about $40 before I got the smart phone). DH gets a blackberry through work so we don't have to pay for his phone.
Also I have always noticed that people who don't have a lot of money always seem to have the latest phones and gadgets. Maybe this lack of priorities is the reason that they don't have more money.
I have had a BlackBerry now for about 3 years and I love it. I will not ever have a "dumb" phone again. We are self-employed so we need to have constant access to our email and H travels often to remote areas so he often has to use his Iphone for wi-fi. I use mine for Facebook, internet, etc. but mainly for the email capabilities it offers. And when I was in school, I had to have access to my emails because we were on so many timelines and timeframes that limited our options so I had to be able to submit an email or question/answer when I was not able to access my laptop.
I also like the option to have the video and camera capabilities as it is easier to grab my phone than dig up the video recorder or camera.
That said, we both plan on getting the Samsung Galaxy 3 in May when my contract is up so we are on the same schedule. H has an older Iphone (3 something? maybe?) and he is really wanting the Galaxy. Actually, having typed that - I might get it for him for Christmas....
