So, he got his shots today and one oral vaccine. It was pretty rough, especially because there was a brand new MA being trained that gave him the vaccine and she was nervous and took forever. I asked the other MA to do his second shot. I tried to give him Tylenol beforehand, but he never takes medicine out of a bottle for me, so the MA gave it to him for me. She just closed his cheeks together and he eventually swallowed it...after screaming for about five minutes. It seemed to help, he fell asleep as soon as we got in the car and he's pretty calm right now.
Anyways, that wasn't even the worst part of the appointment...
We had an ultrasound about two weeks ago of Sergio's kidneys. His dad has a birth defect that wasn't detected until he was 13 years old and just happened to get a physical. He has a flap of skin in the tube that leads to his kidney, blocking function of that kidney. So, he has two kidneys, but one is blocked off and doesn't function. It is enlarged and his parents were told that as long as it didn't bother him or was painful, it could stay in.They don't know when it stopped functioning, but just that at one point, it was functioning. When I was pregnant, the doctor looked for any kidney issues at my 20 week anatomy ultrasound and everything was normal. We got this second ultrasound just because I felt like we should.
Good thing I did. It turns out he has hydronephrosis (enlargement) of his left kidney. We have to go to Children's Hospital to get a more in depth ultrasound and then we'll see where we go from there.
His doctor is pretty optimistic. He says that sometimes this happens just because their bodies are still adjusting and that is usually evens out around 3 months (which is in only 4 weeks...). But, enlargement of the kidney is how this condition SO has started out.
I worry enough about SO only having one functioning kidney (God forbid anything happen to it...). It sucks that I'm having to worry about Sergio now too. Hopefully it evens out, but the odds don't seem to be on his side.
Re: Such a sad appointment (bad news, shots, etc.)
Poor mama, I can't imagine the stress you must be feeling. Lots of healthy, super-normal-kidney thoughts headed your sweet boy's way! Good for you for being extra vigilant!

8-25-2012 - Lucas born via C-section at 38 Weeks 2 days
DD had the exact prognosis at her 37 week u/s and at her u/s 3 days after birth. She goes for a voiding on the 19th where they give her dye and do an xray to see if her left ureter is kinked or it its all fixed itself.
Hopefully all goes well for Sergio!!

I'm sorry, but fingers crossed the next u/s yields som positive results.

if being pregnant, and now being a mom, has taught me anything, it's that we will worry about EVERYTHING even when it's very likely to turn into nothing.
i know that there are special circumstances with your SOs birth defect but, if your doctor is optimistic go with that for now. it sounds like it's very likely to still be nothing.
breathe. it will be okay.
