Uncircumcised mamas

Not moms that are uncircumcised...you get the point.

Does your pediatrician ever pull back your son's foreskin?

Mine never has, until today when I mentioned that there seems to be some white stuff (kind of looks like extra skin, but isn't...it wipes off after quite a little intense scrubbing with a wipe, but it keeps reappearing). He pulled his foreskin back, which I have never done because everything I've ever read says absolutely not to, and behold...there was more white stuff. He said it's just extra tissue, kind of like it's shedding? Anyways, after he was done, I noticed a little redness. Again, he hasn't done this at any other appointment. It just made me nervous.

Anyone else's DS have this white stuff appearing? Or do I just sound crazy?

Re: Uncircumcised mamas

  • I don't know about white stuff but we were always told from the moment he got his circumcision to pull it back every diaper change. I always was paranoid cleaning it, still am, since his cousin got a bad infection on his "not" circumcised penis. I wouldn't worry if it's a little red. It'll go away. If you're worried, put some vaseline on it.

  • My pedi did this to my first son once, just to show me what I should be doing from time to time and I cringed!  I was like "no don't do that!"  lol!  He never did it again, cause he was just showing me and I for sure never did it to my son!  I say leave it alone.  It works itself out.  My LO has that white waxy stuff on his little balls too.  I just wipe it away.

  • Both of my boys were circumcised, and I've noticed the white stuff on both of them occasionally.  It's never been a big deal, and I just wash it off in the bathtub.  It goes away as they get older--maybe within just a few months, I think?

Our doc has never done this nor have they mentioned it. I just leave it alone and wash/wipe the surface.
    This.
But I've heard the white stuff is completely normal. Just leave it alone, and it comes off by itself.

  • I've seen this before too. I just wipe it with the wipes. I don't pull back the foreskin. At the hospital I watched a nurse change him, and they didn't pull it back so I figured I'm doing it right.

Ps I thought I was like the only one who didn't circumsizesp my Lo. People get writers out when they go to change him, and see his penis.

  • Its called smegma and is totally normal, it is a protective layer between the two layers of skin.  Your body makes smegma as well.

DS is almost two and never had his foreskin retracted.  Our pedi tried once and I yelled at him.  Forced retraction can really damage your son's penis. Once he is old enough you can tell him to retract it and clean under it but your son should be the first one to do it.

Speaking of doing it on their own... DS did that a few years ago cause he was playing with it.  Well the skin under there is so sensitive that he didn't want to move and he couldn't pull it back.  Dh had to do it for him, lol.. But it was hilarious to watch my son lay around like he was hurt cause of what he did.  Once it was back to normal he was like "Daddy fixed my peepee!!"

  • Neither of my boys have had the white stuff and their foreskin has never been pulled back. I've always heard that it shouldn't be pulled back. A pedi pulling it back is different though.
  • We were told to never pull it back!

Lol, this is why when we decided not to circ, I told SO he was in charge of all things penis related.

  • I haven't noticed that on my son, but as an RN, I can tell you that what chibimommy said is absolutely accurate. It's totally normal and isn't specific to uncircumcised boys.

Also, I haven't done a thing to my son's foreskin. Just wash it like you would a finger is what I've been told.
