When to switch diaper sizes?

This probably sounds like a stupid question. It was pretty easy to tell when to switch from newborn to size 1 because she grew length wise and the newborns got too short on her. Well now that she has some chub on her, I'm wondering if she needs to move up to a size 2? My SIL told me that diapers are too small when they leave red marks on the baby and when you start to notice more blow outs.

Well the size 1 diapers do leave indents on her but they seem to fit her perfectly. Like when I put a fresh one on her it's pretty long, then when it's full of pee it gets pretty rounded and not long looking any more if that makes sense. She only blows out of the diaper if we wait too long after she pooped because they are sooo runny. And when I mean wait too long, I mean if we don't change her within a minute of her pooping.

I guess I could just try the size 2 and see how they work. Just wondering how you mamas decide when it's time to go up a size? She is 13 lbs by the way.

  • Sergio just went up to 2s and he was 13 pounds two weeks ago. I went up when the redness started showing up on his legs...I wouldn't want my underwear digging into my thighs.

  • We just go by when they leak or blowout more. We switched Charlie at 1 week to Pampers size 2 because he was leaking out of almost every other one. He was 11lbs at that point and he's chunkier than he is long.

  • I do diapers from Amazon and didn't want to be stuck with a half box of too small diapers, so I ordered 2's. They are a little big so I have to go pick up a small box of 1's. What your SIL said sounds right. An excess in blowouts is a good indicator. It sounds like she is still good in ones for the moment.

  • In my experience I try to stay with the smallest size. You get more for your money in a box of diapers. If she's not leaking or having blowouts, don't worry about it. Once you get a leak, I'd size up if I were you. I'm jealous of Brooke's chunky legs. I wish Adeline's were chunky. My sister's been calling her "Thumbelina legs"

  • WE're in the same situation.  I use mainly cloth, but when I do use disposables, she is still in size 1 (at somewhere between 13-14 lbs, haven't weighed her in over a week).  They look long when fresh, and round when full.  I thought we'd try on a size 2 (as we are running to the end of our last size 1's anyways), but NOPE.  She had a blowout because her waist was too small!  I can't make the waist velcro thingies tight enough for her.  Back to size 1's for us.  But Chloe is for sure a long skinny one.  With a big head :P

  • I go by fit,  The lbs on the package never match my LO.

  • I just put LO in size 2s and she weighed in at 12.6 pounds at her 2 month appointment today. They're a tad roomie but they don't leak. The size 1s I had were definitely getting too tight for her mega chunk thighs.

  • We moved up to sz 2 when he was only 11. He is long so he out grew them. Now the 2's are leaving marks on his thighs but still have plenty room elsewhere so he's staying till he gets chunkier.

  • We use mainly cloth, but even when I use them they leave some marks/indents on him. We use disposables at night and if we go out for long periods and are still in newborn at 8.5 lbs. We have a giant box of size 1s, but when I put one on him last week we had our first ever blowout, and I'm guessing because it was way too big. The same goes with the cloth, if I back them out to one snap larger, they are too big and he pees out of them, but if they are snapped to the tightest, they leave marks. I can still fit a finger or two into the waist band, so I'm guessing they are okay, I like prefolds and Velcro covers for the sheer fact that I can adjust as needed, but also most of my OS stash are snaps.
