High-Risk Pregnancy

Discrepancy between abdominal and head circumference?

Hello high risk board. I don't know if I am over reacting but I am so frustrated. I am expecting by second in december. My first son was delivered by c section as I had complete placenta previa. This pregnancy I was diagnosed with a marginal previa and had a follow up US at 29 weeks to check the placenta. The good news was that the placenta is now just low lying and had moved enough that the doctor thinks it will not even be considered low in another month. But the US said the head is measuring at 30 weeks and abdomen at 28 weeks. I don't understand if that is considered a big discrepancy but now I am waiting to hear about another US to recheck this. I worried though because the OB said that both a previous section and the resolving previa were risk factor s that the baby may not be getting good flow and the body may be diverting blood to.the head at the expense of the abdominal organs. Any one with any advise our experience to share TIA.

  • I don't think that is a significant difference. There have been several times that there was a 2 week discrepancy in some measurements, and my MFM said that it was normal and also most likely due to position of baby when they take the measurement. Also if you are 29 weeks, that's really only a one week discrepancy on either end, which is most certainly normal. Hope your placenta continues to move up!

  • Thanks for the reply. I had never heard of this before. The placenta was not as worrisome because I'd been through it with my first but the measurement thing really through me for a loop, glad to hear it is likely normal.

  • Did they talk about doing doppler studies?

  • I'm no DR but I think 2 weeks isn't a huge difference, our Son's H/C and A/C were 4 weeks different at one point and there wasn't a huge rush to do anything. I did deliver him at 38 weeks but mainly because of my Pre-E issues and clotting disorder. Are they having his growth re-checked? We use to go every 3-4 weeks for checks and once we got to 34 weeks we did weekly and then bi-weekly NST/BPP.

  • It is a long weekend here but I should get a call Tuesday with another US appointment. The doctor said he would just recheck the growth for now and we but talk about it again on my next visit in two weeks time.

  • This happened after placenta previa wth one of the twins.  From about 25 weeks, on, this was the deal with her.  She is totally fine and is developing normally.  If your doctor isn't concerned, don't be worried (I know it's easier said than done - I was a wreck).
