Preemies

What do you do with your preemies after eating?

My girls are 2 weeks old-born at 35 weeks. They're very sleepy which I know is totally normal. Im just curious what you do after feedings... do you swaddle them up and put them back in their crib/bassinet?

I have them out for tummy time 5-10 mins per day per pedi instrucitons. But other than that, its eat, feed and sleep. Should I be trying to do more during the day so that maybe they sleep better at night? They're up mor often than every 3 hours at night for some reason... sometimes for no reason at all.

Eating and sleeping is the main thing for them to be doing right now.  When Judith was their GA, we reswaddled and put her back in the bassinet (she was still in the NICU at that point).  We did that for a good month and a half to 2 months after she came home, but sometimes I would switch it up and wear her for a nap.

ok good to know this is really what they do. I gave them both baths tonight so that was different :)

    When was your LO born?

  • When DS came home I changed him, fed him , swaddled him and repeated all day. There's not much more to do. When he hit his due date he stayed awake longer and became a bit more active. Now his naps are getting shorter and play time longer. But it sounds like you are doing everything right!!!

  • I don't think DS got on an eat, play, sleep schedule until he was at least 6 weeks (he was born at 34w6days).  He had reflux, so what little awake time he did have after eating was spent trying to keep the BM/formula down.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • Sounds exactly right to me! DS had silent reflux so we'd keep him propped up - post-meals were never a good idea for tummy time in this house ;) It's a sweet time - enjoy the snuggles.
  • For what seemed like forever our life was wake, change, eat, sleep, repeat. If they're sleepy, put them back down to sleep and enjoy having yours hands free! When they really start to wake up you'll miss that time!

And keeping them up during the day won't help them sleep at night. Waking up every 3 hours actually isn't bad for that age!

I pretty much still do that right now. DS just hit is due date. He'll stay up and "play" after maybe one feeding a day. Beyond that, it's change, eat, sleep, repeat.
Yep. She's much more awake now than she was for the first 6 weeks or so, but still goes back to sleep after most feedings. We do tummy time once or twice a day. Other than that, it's cuddling, swinging, or back in the PnP.
