Baby Names

The name Noelle

DH and I had yet another discussion of names that went basically nowhere, except that he agreed to the name Noel/Noelle *if* she is born on Christmas Eve or Christmas, because of the meaning of the name.

I love this idea, but I'm not due until January 20th so I'm really hoping she's not here either of those days! Though the fact that we actually agree on a name and can give it to her if she comes then makes me want to bounce on an exercise ball for a mile while downing a bottle of castor oil on December 24th...

But this got me thinking about this name that I love! What are your opinions on the name of a little girl that's not a Christmas baby?

Re: The name Noelle

  • It's fine if it's not a Christmas baby. Are all Natalie's born on Christmas?

    You're overthinking this.

  • I'd name her Noelle especially if she isn't born on Christmas. It's a beautiful name.

  • Great name no matter when she was born
  • I agree, I prefer Noelle on a NOT December baby!

And I tried the castor oil thing.  It did NOT work, but it gave my bum a party!  Ugh.  Never again.  :-)

  • I know a baby Noelle born in November and it fits her perfect. I agree that it would be cheesy to name a Christmas baby, Noelle. If you would like the name on Christmas why not on every other day of the year?

  • We are 99.9% sure we are naming our little girl Noelle, and my due date is March 2. I think its kinda cheesy to use a Christmas name on Christmas.

My 4 year old daughters tumbling coach is named Noelle (thats where we got the name from) and her birthday is in June. My aunts name is Holly and her birthday is in October, and my friend just had a little girl named Natalie last month. None of them were born on Christmas day, but have Christmas names. So I dont think its important when the birthday is. If you love it, use it!!!! :)

PLUS: No one wants to be born on Christmas. It must be hard to share your birthday with such a big holiday. January 20 is a wonderful due date.

Question: We are struggling on picking a middle name for Noelle, what are some you are considering?

  • My parents almost named me Noel ( like it spelled this way much better that Noelle) and I was born on December 30th. I think you can use it no matter when she is born, its a very cute name.

I thought Noel was the boys spelling for the name pronounced "nole" . Like Scott Foley's character on Felicity. And Noelle was the girls name pronounced "no- elle"?

  • My XSIL's mn is Noel and they pronounce it No-ell but I think it just seems wrong. I also know a man named Noel pronounced like Joel. My point is I would only use Noelle if I was going to use it for a girl.

  • I'm in the minority here as I find it so odd when someone is named Noelle who ISN'T born in December. The name literally means Christmas. I don't think there's anything cheesy about it, it just fits.

I feel the same way about women named April, June, Autumn, Summer, etc. I met a baby named Autumn who in reality was born in May, and I have to admit I gave a serious side-eye to the mother.

Noel is the boy's spelling pronounced Nole.

    Noelle is the girl's spelling.

Yea, thats what I was saying. I didnt think Noel was a girl spelling at all

  • See, that's what I thought, that she didn't have to be a Christmas baby, but DH is big on the meaning behind names.

He said it's a nice name, but he thinks it would be cheesy if she was born Jan-Feb.

And I'm not really going to try to self induce that early, just exaggerating the fact that this is the only name both of us have even remotely agreed on.

  • I think Noelle is a great name for a baby born in any season.

  • I think it's fine to name a baby Noelle any time of the year, not just Christmas. My name is Holly and I was born in April....I do get comments once and awhile, "oh, you must have been born at Christmas." But no big deal.

All of the women in my dad's family have the middle name Rose, including me, so that's kind of a front runner for middle names no matter what her first name is.

  • I love the name Noelle & think it's cute for anytime of the year.  I think it's especially cute if born in December but think it's work any month.  We actually had planned on naming our little girl Noelle because that is the only name DH & I can agree on even though it seems similar to big sister, Ella.  That is until my DH realized how confusing it would be when we are saying "No Ella" to big sister.  Back to the drawing borard for us, hoping we can still use it for the MN.
