Still doing bottle before bed?

Hi! Our routine for LO has always been bath/bottle/ and than rock him for 5-10 minutes after bottle and he goes to his crib at this point he is usually asleep. Do I need to start sleep training now that he is 7 months and not do the bottle right before bed? Please share your routines!

Re: Still doing bottle before bed?

  • LO goes to bed at 9. I give him his last bottle at 8.

  • I still nurse before bed. I'm going to ask about this at my 9 months appointment.

  • I think you can still do a bottle at night ... just do it before bath time instead of after. That way, you can put DS in his crib awake (take out the rocking part) and he'll learn to fall asleep on his own.

That being said, I don't think you have to sleep train if you don't want to.  If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Our routine is bath, diaper/jammies/lotion, story, nurse, and crib.  However, my DS doesn't always fall asleep while nursing.  When he's done, I just put him in his crib wide awake, kiss him goodnight and he puts himself to sleep.

  • I sill nurse right before I put her to bed.  I also nurse (or at least offer) before every nap, too...she hasn't nursed to sleep in a long time, but I like for her to have a full belly before she goes to sleep.

  • We always do the bottle at about the same time (8:30, give or take a few minutes based on how tired Rowan is seeming or what's going on). Sometimes she falls asleep while drinking and we put her straight to bed. Sometimes she is still drowsy but awake, and we put her to bed. Sometimes she is fully awake, and we put her down and have to come up a few times, or give her her lovey. It generally seems to work out well, though on occasion there's had to be a lot of rocking. Only about once a month or so. She has always been pretty good at getting herself to sleep.

Her waking up in the middle of the night... is a different story.

  • Uh! This is the worst!! So here is our attempt at bed time. We give him a bottle. I lay him down with about three toys. He will cry but play a little. he drifts off with his toys and eventuattly falls asleep. My plan is to decrease the amount of toys untill he just drifts off. It is working so far. Good luck.

  • DD usually nurses 30-60 minutes before bed. If she's really tired, she falls asleep while nursing.

I say if it works for you, stick with it.

  • The girls were falling asleep while eating until a couple of weeks ago. They just stopped falling asleep on their own, we didn't change schedules or anything. It was a bit if an adjustment and a little CIO for Natalia but now we do solids, play time, baths, bottles, cuddling/reading until drowsy, and bed.

  • Between 7:30-8:00 we do bath, bottle, story, bed.  She goes down drowsy and takes about 5-15 mins to fall asleep.  Now that the first round of teething is over she's STTN again!!

Same here.  Sometimes however he doesn't fall asleep while nursing but he will put himself to sleep just fine once I put him in the crib.

  • Yeah we still do bottle before bed. It has always been part of her bedtime ritual and she knows that it's sleepy time right after her bottle. I don't really feel like changing it any time soon. It works so whatever... She can be wide awake after drinking it but she never fusses or cries. She just rolls around in the crib for a while and eventually falls asleep. Other times she is totally zinked out by the time we're done. In any case - it works and I'm not changing it yet.
  • We do bath, bottle/rock, then bed.  Sometimes he falls asleep with drinking the bottle and rocking, but most of the time he doesn't.  I will usually try and rock him to sleep, because I want to, but most of the time he won't let me and I just put him to bed.  I didn't do any "sleep training". I've always just followed he cues and done what he's wanted.

  • Bath 7:30, bottle 7:45, asleep by 8. I like our rountine, so I will keep it awhile longer.

  • I nurse right before bed. Sometimes he falls asleep nursing, sometimes not.

With my daughter, I nursed her right before bed until she was ~13 months old - and then replaced that with a sippy of milk while we read a book (she never drank too much) and took that away maybe around 18 months or so?

  • Just a thought (don't think I saw anybody else mention it) but my mom has encouraged me to start brushing her teeth after her last bottle/nurse session. Sleep training or not, letting babies sleep with BM or Formula on their teeth isn't a good idea.  She only has one tooth, but I diligently brush it every night. :)
