Daycare microwaving bottles...WWYD?

The other day when dropping off LO I said he had been crying on the way in so he was ready to eat.  They asked if the bottles were ready and I said it needed to be warmed (formula).  She took the bottle and then I heard the microwave on.  I really didn't know what to do at that point and was on my way to work so didn't say anything.  Today I decided to ask when I picked up LO.  It was confirmed that they do microwave bottles.  She said they shake it up afterwards and test it on their skin.  I'm not sure that I am okay with this. How would you react or am I overreacting?

  • I would have an issue with it and tell them that. They should do what you want with your child!

  • I would not be cool with that. They need to buy a bottle warmer! I might even shell out for one myself for them to use.

  • If you have a problem with it then you need to discuss it with the staff.
Personally, I nuke LOs bottles too and follow the same protocol as the DC and I've never had a problem/burn.

  • I do the same thing that your daycare does and haven't had an issue, but if you're uncomfortable with it then def let them know. I mean, daycare is expensive, so they should be able to afford a bottle warmer. Esp considering you're really not supposed to nuke bottles to begin with. I personally would not be bothered with that though, but it's 100% understandable for you to be.

  • I personally warm my bottles in the microwave. Never had a problem. Anyways, if you aren't okay with this than bring it to your attention? You don't have a care plan set up? Idk if every daycare does it or not but mine we write down our routine and special instructions.
  • Will your LO drink it cold or room temp? Our little guy drinks it straight from the fridge, always has, which has kept us from having to get bottle warmed up before he eats.
  • I'd def bring it up. I thought microwaving changed the make up of formula,,,. Unless they're just microwaving the water,,,? Then I'd be fine with it.

But, if I were ff, I'd get my LO on room temp ASAP. Try bringing already full of water bottles at room temp & ask them to just add formula, & feed!

  • Just one more reason why daycares need strict regulation. I'd ask them to stop and use a bottle warmer. If they can't do that I'd find another daycare. Also, is there any kind of authority/regulating body in your area for daycares? If so, I'd contact them. Microwaving bottles is very dangerous.

  • I would have a big problem. Also, you aren't supposed to shake a bottle with breastmilk. Swirling is ok.

Honestly, we've been using bottles with pumped milk and I've microwaved them from the get go. I don't just pull a nipple out and call it good though. I swish the milk around and shake it up and then test it on my skin. If its too cold, I throw it in for longer. Too hot, I add some more cold milk. I've never ever had an issue with her getting burned or it not being the right temperature.

But you have to do what you want. It is your LO and you have the right to call the shots. If your not comfortable with them warming up bottles in the microwave, then tell them so. I doubt that they don't check it or would burn your LO's mouth, but again its all about your comfort level.

You know microwaving breastmilk kills the antibodies in it right?  And shaking it up breaks down the proteins?

  • Wow thats a huge no no! In our state daycares are not allowed to even have microwaves in the infant rooms. All bottles must be warmed by warm water or a bottle warmer.

Microwaving kills the antibodies in the breastmilk, so if your microwaving your bottles your destroying the good nutrition in your breastmilk before your baby even gets it.

It also creates "hot spots" in the bottle, so while they test it on their wrists before giving it to your lo while she's eating she could suck a hot spot in the milk and burn her mouth. I would soooooooo have a problem with them microwaving the milk.

  • Pretty sure that is against the state regulations for day care operation.  It is here in New York State.  We used to warm them in a crock pot.

  • Can you speak with other parents, perhaps get a petition going to buy a few warmers?  There are some that work great for under 20 bucks!

Where I live, it is against health code regs to have them add the formula. They have to come pre-mixed and capped.

  • I work in a child care center and we are not allowed to warm bottles in the microwave. When parents ask us to do it, we have to tell them we are not allowed to use a microwave. Our infant room uses a crock pot for formula bottles and a bottle warmer for breast milk bottles.

In my room if a parent asks me to warm something, I use a cup or bowl, and warm water.

  • If it really bothers you (and you don't trust that bringing it up will do any good), get some stainless steel baby bottles (like these:  https://www.purastainless.com/) for daycare and then they won't likely try to put them in their microwave :) Plus they're compatible with several different brand nipples, so there's a chance you might be using one that will work in them. I would be highly annoyed if they were nuking bottles considering I'd be giving breastmilk and nuking destroys the good stuff in the milk (thus wasting all the time and effort I put into pumping).
