is it bad that we wake DD before WE go to bed?

DD was doing great with staying dry overnight and was only wearing undies to bed during the summer. About a week before school started, so around the beginning of Sept, she started peeing overnight about 5 out of 7 nights a week. It was suggested on this board to wake her before we go to bed so she can use the potty and then we put her right back to bed. We're lucky that she's a great sleeper so we have no problem getting her right back to sleep.

This has been working for us and has been dry in the morning ever since. This is ok to do right?

Thanks

  • If it works for you and your kid then it is fine. My DD had the same issue and is now staying dry with a pullup over her underwear, whatever works without ruining her mattress.

  • Is it OK?  If you want to do it go for it.  Is it going to help your DD become night trained - sorry but no.  The only thing you are doing is waking her up and messing with her sleep cycle.  Yes, she is not wetting the bed and that is great but bottom line, this will not help her get night trained any faster.  I personally would just put her in a pull-up at night and let her get a really great nights sleep.  My guess is she is so tired from school (and from you waking her up) that she is sleeping really hard and just not waking up to go potty.  Once she adjusts more to school and her new schedule, I would not be surprised if she went back to either sleeping through the night and being dry or waking at night to go potty.  Starting school is a huge adjustment.

  • This worked for us with our oldest, but I don't think we would try it with our 2nd son due to his personality. He would expect it and it would wake him up. So totally depends on the kid! We only had to do it for a couple of weeks, and he got right back on his cycle.

    ditto this

Just let her wear a pull up at night until she's waking up dry all the time.

agreed.  uninterrupted sleep is more important.

DD1 is just starting to wake up dry occasionally. She's such a hard sleeper that I don't think we could even wake her up to go to the bathroom if we wanted to.

  • It sounds like its working for you guys so is a great solution.  Beginning/end of school year is stressful for kids (even if you don't see any other signs of stress).  If she's going right back to sleep, then it's not a huge interruption of sleep so don't worry about that.
  • We did that when we were night training DD1. We only had to do it for a few months, maybe less, before we phased it out and she has been night trained for over a year with no accidents. (she turned 4 in June)

I totally disagree with this. Putting her in a pull up tells her it's ok to pee in her pants. This is not helping her potty train, it's sending a mixed message. What you are doing tells her it's ok to wake up to go potty, which is what adults do. If you want to wean her off this practice, then slowly back up the time you wake her later and later. Yes, it probably means you will have to set an alarm to get up for a while. But IMO its far better to do this temporarily and help her get back to dry nights than to put her back in a diaper, which is essentially what a pull up is.

I completely disagree. Putting her in a pull up means she won't have to wake up with a wet bed in the middle of the night or in the morning. It means you're allowing her bladder to mature until she's physiologically capable of staying dry.

    image-auntie-:

Bed wetting is a laundry issue. She'll be dry at night when she is physiologically and neurologically capable of rousing from deep sleep to pee. One downside to a 'dream pee" is that you could be training her to need to void more often and actually delay her body maturing around this. But if it works for you, it works for you.

    I agree with this 100%.

  • The same thing happened to us. DD1 went for months without any overnight accidents, then all of a sudden I found myself changing her bed sheets almost every morning. We started taking her to the bathroom before heading to bed (at around 11). After one whole week without any accidents, we dropped the night time bathroom trip and she was fine again. No idea what happened, so I'm going to blame it on a growth spurt.
