HI ladies!
I have a 31 month old and she is delayed to about 19 months with her expressive speech. We have an appt scheduled with a Developmental Ped and Geneticist. She had alcohol exposure during pregnancy and we adopted her at birth.
She goes to speech twice a week for a total of 4 hours a month. Do you think this is enough?
So, my problem and question. We have an 11 month old son and she is biting him on average 3 times a day. Once a week she will break skin on him. She pinches him too and it seems to be very random and no warning. Most times this happens and I am in the room and about 2-3 arms length away from the both of them.
Right now she gets told no and goes into a timeout. Afterwards she signs sorry and gives brother a kiss. Any other suggestions on what to do? THis is obviously not working and I am stressed to the max over this behavior. She doesnt do this at "school" twice a week away from us.
Thank you!!!
Re: severe speech delay and Biting
Sorry you're going through this with your daughter.
But, I can tell you that it's not uncommon for kids this age to go through a biting stage-unfortunately! Of course, I realize you have some extra concerns with her developmental delays. So, my first thought was to wonder if you've asked your pediatrician about this behavior? I'm sure they've run into this with other kids and might have some thoughts to offer you. I've also heard some advice on this topic while working at Focus on the Family. I think they did a short broadcast on this subject and also have some articles. So, if you're interested, you can always search for "biting" on their website and you should get some results. Lastly, since you mentioned that your daughter was adopted, you might want to look into some material that specifically talks about behavior in adopted children. I know your daughter has been with you since birth, so it may not apply. But, if you're interested, Dr. Karyn Purvis has written a lot on this topic and it might be worthwhile to look into her resources or check out her website. So, just some ideas to consider. I hope they help!
