Christening Question

For those of you who are christening/baptising your baby- DH's sister asked us if we wanted to do a joint christening with her 2nd baby who was born on 7/24. She wants to do in the first two weeks of October. While I'm flattered, I'm not sure this is what I want to do.

Pro's:

It gets done right away and we can split the cost of the food/drinks, reception afterwards, etc.

We could ask them to be godparents or backups if the two people we picked can't make it b/c it's so early in October.

Cons:

I kind of want little guy to have his own day, you know?

If he's really late after my due date, 10-14 days late, this might make him maybe a week old when he's christened. Isn't this really young?

Don't know if the godparents can make it as they live in Kansas and California and October is really soon.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Re: Christening Question

  • IMO, your cons outweigh the pros. To me, choosing godparents was a big deal and I wouldn't want to comprise that over money. Also, I do think one week after birth is really early. DS is one week old today and there's no way I would have the energy for a baptism. I barely had the energy to make dinner last night. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure it will be a beautiful day whatever you decide.

This is totally what I was thinking. Thanks, decision made.

  • Just wondering the relationship with the Godparents you had picked. To me a Godparent is someone to help raise the child in a Christian environment and be there to help the child with their spiritual growth. Are they going to be close to your child?

I wouldn't change Godparents to save some money on a reception, but I would consider the relationship.

Yes, it's more important for the relationship to be close. The Godparents we had picked would be far away physically but both would be there for our son in a second. We haven't actually asked them yet, so it's possible that they could turn us down, as well. I guess we waited a little too long on deciding this, but I think there's still time.

I don't think so. We still have not chosen ours. When we do, I will then call the church and look for a day before Thanksgiving most likely, that will work for the Godparents, us, and the grandparents. Last time I had to wait until DS1 was 4 months old because they would not Christen during Lent so it got pushed way back. This time I want to do it sooner but definitely not when he's 1 or 2 weeks old.

Maybe you can see if your sister will wait another month and do it then?
