newly walking in winter

As it's been a little more chilly in the mornings, I began to think about winter.  DD isnt' walking yet, but presumably will be in the next couple of months.  If your LO was a "new walker" in the colder winter months, what did you put on their feet?  Did you put socks and the soft soled shoes (and carry them everywhere)?  Did they have snow boots?  What about a winter coat?  Did you have a big puffy parka thing, or was a lighter fleece jacket enough?  When she was a baby last year, she was always in her carrier, and we just used blankets and sleep n plays with feet.  TIA!

Re: newly walking in winter

  • My daughter started walking in the summer months, but for the first several months we used socks and the soft-soled shoes when we went out.  They have an early-walker line at Stride Rite that we bought from.  As for coats, in the winter I did use a normal winter coat.  However, we would take it off before putting her in her car seat since it is unsafe and we would keep a blanket in the car to put over her.  It's a huge pain, but it worked for us.  We will be doing this again this winter and she's 2 now.  Hope this helps!

  • We typically sent him to DC is Robeez or soft soled shoes, but had a pair we got from Stride Rite (for early walkers, so thin flexible soles) for when we went outside.  I actually got him a fleece from Lands End that is rated high for warmpth, but isn't very thick so it's still safe to wear in his car seat.  I have seen it suggested that for puffy jackets you take them off right before you put the child in the seat, buckle them and then put the jacket on backwards so the seat is still safe (you dont' want a bulky jacket on in a seat for safety reasons).

  • DS started wearing soft soled shoes (Robeez) and socks around 8 months. He was crawling at this point. He started walking at 10 months and we got him regular sneakers at 12.5 months. For going outside (when it was dry), the socks and Robeez were fine for him (this was February-June).

Even though he can walk/run very well now, we still carry him to and from the car because he's not great at holding our hands and I don't trust him to not run into the street.

Last year I got him a winter jacket. He hardly needed it because it was so mild. Luckily, it still fits him so he can wear it this year too. Most days he just wore a thicker hoodie. This year, I think I will get DS snow boots, but mainly for playing outside, rather than walking to and from the car.

  • DD started walking around Halloween when she was 10.5 months old.  We kept her barefoot or in socks indoors and used Stride Rite sneakers when outside.  We carried her anytime there was snow or ice outside, so we didn't get snow boots or anything (and this was the winter of Snowpocolypse).  She had a parka/puffy coat from Target - it was a 2 part w/ a fleece liner and water proof outshell.  She wore the fleece in the car/carseat, but we took the shell off in the car.

  • My biggest worry is that D2 will think we're crazy when we put shoes on her. DH put her in footie pjs and she seriously couldn't sleep.

But we'll probably use Robeeze or some knock off, we have a few pairs that D1 wore.  And we do a fleece to the car and then a blanket.  D1 didn't have a winter jacket her first winter, which was Snowpocolypse and she survived.  :)

  • DD started walking last December. We put Robeez & socks on her for daycare/going out and usually just socks at home. Honestly, I didn't really let her "walk" outside much when she was first learning - we have a large parking cement pad and very little yard that wasn't super muddy.

She wore a winter coat in her carseat, but it wasn't particularly puffy or thick - it was a thin fleece liner and a thin outershell - probably the equivalent of a thicker fleece jacket. This year we will probably take her out to the car coatless and put it on her when we are getting where we are going. I expect this to be a problem and a HUGE PITA because she LOVES putting a coat on. Sigh.

  • Thanks for all the responses so far.  I was thinking Robeez-type shoes and socks, but then I had this vision (probably crazy) of her playing in the snow, which seemed to warrant something more water resistant.  This is all theoretical since she a) isn't walking and b) does not currently own a single pair of shoes or socks that fit.  She enjoys being barefoot.

In a pinch - you can always old school for snow shoes/boots and tape big ziploc over her shoes & feet and put a little tape on the bottoms for traction.

FWIW, DS has had 2 sets of snowboots that were given to him as gifts, he only wore one pair of them and only one time; for like 15 minutes.  He was born during the two big snow storms, so obviously he wasn't going out then at a few weeks old and the winter after that we didn't really get any snow, and last winter was the only time he wore them and he only wanted to stay outside for 15 minutes, and we really only had maybe 2 inches so we could have gotten away with regular shoes and just let them dry.  I imagine snow boots are really only useful when they get to the age where they want to play outside for long periods of time, which is what 6 or 7?
