Craving Ramen

So, I have a bad head cold and I already had my cup of tea for the day, now I'm sipping hot water, but what am I craving now--cheap, delicious ramen noodles. How bad do you think it would be? Does anybody have any recipes without the high-sodium flavor packets?

Re: Craving Ramen

  • You can do just about anything with the noodles. I don't have any specific recipes, though. I have a package of them every now and then, but I just use about half of the packet. Still not totally healthy, but you get the flavor (which is what I craved) and you're cutting out a good portion of the bad stuff (read: sodium). :)

  • Im craving this too!!! But haven't indulged yet!
  • make the ramen, and only use a little bit of the packet....thats what I have been doing....maybe add some fresh ginger and veggies?
  • When I make ramen I still use the entire packet but once I'm done cooking it I just dump the broth out and eat the noodles. I do this all the time not even when I'm pregnant and it has the nice taste without all the sodium.

That's so funny that you mentioned ramen. This article was on CNN.com today about what broke college students eat - lots of ideas for what to do with ramen

  • It's what I had for dinner last night ^^. I just watched my sodium for breakfast and lunch, and I didn't feel guilty at all! I add 2 eggs, spinach and peas to make it a bit healthier.
  • Yea, I've also been wanting ramen noodles! I had 2 last week and so I decided to go to the store and get some healthier soups for this week! lol :)

  • I had Cup Noodles ramen for lunch today with a string cheese and a whole lot of water. I dump out a lot of the broth, which I hope cuts down on some of the sodium.

My dh taught me a great ramen recipe. It isn't exactly the same, but is much healthier. I use an organic bullion, or my own veggie stock if I have some. Boil in some egg noodles. Grate some fresh veggies. After noodles are done put the soup and noodles in bowl. Add grated veggies - we typically do carrots, cabbage, sprouts etc. and some fresh coriander. Let sit for about 3 minutes. VEggies should still be a bit crunchy.

I know some might say this takes the fun out of ramen, but I think it is even tastier.

I have to agree. I add veggies to my soups all the time. They just don't have enough for me. A tad bit healthier and more tasty I think.

I've been horrible about sodium recently since I've had congestion/cold for almost 3 weeks. I've had soup every day for lunch. I wonder if I'm going to have a big weight gain from retained fluid at my next appointment. At least it's not affecting my blood pressure. Checked it yesterday, still in the 110's systolically.

    I do this exactly!

  • This is hilarious. I haven't had ramen since college but I swear I stared at it in the grocery store for about 5 minutes today--whats the deal!?

  • I cook some celery, carrots and onions on the pan while the water is boiling and ramen is cooking. Then I throw them in the pot and use half a flavor packet.

  • It's funny that you mention this! With DD, this was my first, and really only craving during pregnancy. I was sitting at work one night and said that if I didn't get some beef ramen I was going to absolutely die. I terrorized the isles of the grocery store looking for some when I got off work. I did half the flavor pack to cut down on the salt.

  • FWIW eating one bowl of ramen isn't going to ruin your health (or raise your BP). If you had it everyday...then I might be more concerned. Eating it over an extended period of time would impact your health. If you have a cold, it's the broth you would want...so I would just eat the ramen, satisfy the craving and, if it persists, look for an alternative.

  • They make organic ramen, which isn't AS bad for you... :P The brand is Koyo and we love it over here! I still don't eat it regularly just because it's empty calories, but sometimes you gotta have what you want!
