Use a diaper cake?

I just had my first shower today and received a diaper cake.  I went to take it apart and it seems like almost every item and diaper has something hot-glued to it.  I had totally intended to take it apart and use it, but even the wash clothes have hot glue on them.  Is there any way to salvage them?

Re: Use a diaper cake?

  • Hmmm....I've not gotten one before, but I've seen them.  Usually they're just tied together with ribbon.  Will the diapers be salvageable once you peel the hot glue off?  The hot glue should peel right off most things.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks.  I went ahead and started trying to pull things apart and I will be able to use the diapers.  It's the washclothes that I don't know what to do about.  Trying to remove the hot glue just pulls all the threads out.  It sucks because I actually need washclothes!!!  Oh well.  I just didn't know if this was how all diaper cakes were put together.

  • Oh no! I made a diaper cake for my SIL and didn't need any type of glue or anything - just ribbon tied around each layer. I've seen some commercially produced ones that are glued together, but why would they do that?!  lol

As far as I know, the intention is to use the items on the cake. If anything was compromised and ruined by glue I guess it will have to be thrown out. Luckily you can get washcloths pretty cheap if you get desperate. What a bummer :o(

  • What if you tried putting a piece of waxed paper ovet the hot glue and the. Ironing it? I know that helps get things off of carpet. It's worth a shot.so you don't have to pitch the.washcloths.

  • Yikes, I don't put hot glue on diaper cakes when I make them!  I make sure every thing is still usable.  My first thought was to get the glue super cold in the freezer or something, then try to peel it off.  That could be a ridiculous prego brain idea, though.  LOL.

  • That stinks. They wash clothes probably yes, the diapers might be a lost cause. I have made tons of these for friends and I always use rubber bands around the diapers, wash clothes, and blankets and then just prop all the extra stuff around that to avoid this problem. If you are very careful you might be able to get the glue off the diapers.

  • Yikes! They had good intentions I'm sure, but the point of a diaper cake is making something decorative yet still useful. I've seen them made successfully using either sewing pins, ribbon, or rubber bands to tie them together
To salvage the washcloths I'd use the paper bag/iron technique.

  • I have nothing useful to add. I just didn't have my glasses on and thought this post was called "Used Diaper Cake."

I just couldn't imagine what that was, but it sounded hilarious.

Hahaha this made me so happy
  • Wow, I really can't believe someone would hot glue washcloths to a diaper cake. Was it commercially made or homemade? I have a hard time believing someone who makes these professionally wouldn't know that hot glue would ruin washcloths!

You might be able to pull the hot glue off the diapers (I assume they are disposables?) but I don't see how the washcloths can be saved. #1 rule when using hot glue to attach items to a diaper cake: make sure you don't get hot glue on anything but the ribbon!

  • could you try putting the washclothes in the freezer, so the glue gets brittle and breaks off?

  • That's odd they would use hot glue. When I made one for my friend, I intended on it being torn apart and use because the middle of it was a wine bottle. ;)

  • That sucks :( If the iron/wax paper or freezer tricks don't work, I would still keep the wash cloths, unless there is a large amount of hot glue on them. There are a lot of messes to clean up that don't even involve touching the baby. Poop explosions in the car seat, projectile vomit, leaky baby products in the diaper bag etc... it might be good to have extra cloths around that you don't mind getting stained or tossing afterward.
