Play House: Worth it? indoor? outdoor?

Am considering getting the kids a play house for Christmas. Probably a Step 2 or Little Tykes ones. I think they would love it. But, it's not really moveable...so where do you put yours? It would be fun to have it outside here for part of the year, but then where would I store it all winter? Am wondering if it's better to leave it indoors in a play area.

Also, if you have one, do your kids play with it? What ages are they, and do you think they will still be interested for awhile?

  • If you have room indoors, I'd do in indoors.  We had one outdoors and bugs and weeds LOVED to live in it.

  • My DD loves hers. We have a large, screened lanai (very typical in Florida), so we put it out there. If I had a playroom, it would go there. Otherwise, outside, but I'd probably store it in the garage during the summer. (Or winter for most of the country. Winter is our outdoor season and summer is our indoor season, lol.)

  • Our boys age 2 and 3 have one. We had it outside for summer months then moved it inside thier bedroom. They play in it everyday and it has been a year since we got it. I did remove the door when we moved it inside bc they kept slamming it on each other. Great investment!
  • We have always kept ours indoors, in our basement play area. We just thought that they would play with it more inside and we didn't want the weather beating it up. Our girls like it but it's not their favorite.
  • My daughter rarely plays in hers.  It's outside and from spring to fall, it's filled with spider webs and spiders.  They seem to have super sticky webs and they don't just come off with the hose and I'm not a fan of spiders!  So most of the time it's unused.  We've cleaned it off/out for playdates, but for some reason the kids don't really seem to use it as much as I thought they would.

One thing I'd highly suggest....my daughter has gotten two "color your own" cardboard playhouses.  They color the outside and then you assemble it.  She has played with them FAR more than the outdoor one, I can fit it inside and once it's old-news....we can recycle it or fold it up for another day.   They're affordable and not as bulky.  That's just my suggestion!

  • We have an outdoor one (tarped in the winter).  DD got it when she was 2yo (she's 4 now) and still plays in it (as does my 2yo son).  I figure she's got another 2 yrs before she's too tall for it.  They dont seem to miss it in the winter cuz they have a huge play kitchen in the house which def gets more play in the winter than the summer

  • We have one that we keep outside all year (live in MN), it is made of durable plastic and easily stands up to our winters.  We have ours in the backyard, on the rocks that are under and around our deck.  The house is not under the deck, the rocks stick out a bit as I didn't want the house on the grass and this way, I never have to move it.  We also have a slide in that same area that we easily move so the girls land on the grass but the stairs stay on the rock area.  My girls are 4 and 6 and we have had the house 2 years and they love it.  Its not huge but it has a little kitchen area that they love and we bought a little BBQ that we keep on the deck near our real BBQ so they play with all of that anytime we are outside.  We have a ton of play plastic food that we keep in a bucket that they can take outside anytime we want.  We don't leave that outside as our dog loves to chew it!
