Does pumping more burn more calories?

No, I'm not actually considering using pumping as a way to lose weight.

But since my freezer stash is all lipasey I've been trying to build a new one and in turn I've been adding pumping sessions and it made me think of it.

More milk = more calories burned?

Re: Does pumping more burn more calories?

  • I think the more milk you make the more calories you burn.. right?

yes - BUT for me, when I was pumping 50oz a day (EP for baby #1) it made me so darn hungry that I probably ate up all the extra calories I burned!

Lipase sucks BTW...I learned my lesson with #1 after I had 1000 ounces frozen.  I later started feeding only fresh milk 2 days max in the fridge (kept a tiny freezer stash) and donated my future surplus to a milk bank that could use it anyways.  Scalding didn't work for me - I probably did it wrong, but it only gave me another 2ish weeks frozen before the flavor change (as opposed to a month without scalding).

Oh gosh I'm hoping the scalding works for me but I can't be fully sure because it has only been a few weeks so none of my milk is that old yet. Ugh. I'm donating 250 ounces and I thought that was a lot... 1000 is insanely awesome!!!

  • I would say yes, every ounce of human milk has approximately 20 calories (obviously can vary quite a bit). Every ounce you produce, the calories must come from somewhere so I assume that pumping 50oz a day would burn 1000 calories.

However I have no issue eating back any and all calories burned from pumping/bfeeding and/or exercise. I learned this when I trained for a marathon, I would be so hungry all the time I was constantly eating.

What I like about bfeeding is that even though I'm not wasting away to nothing or anything, I did lose almost all the weight without having to try hard. Also I can eat more and remain the same size. I like eating.

Since right now I don't have time to exercise much, pumping is like my exercise during the day, lol. When I am done pumping I'll start going to the gym at lunch instead so it should all even out..

I've been having a little trouble losing weight but I have noticed that I am not gaining any weight, which is nice. I used to gain alot after a week of eating like crap. Now I stay the same and I have BFing to thank!

  • If I pump in addition to nursing I add it separately to MFP because, like someone said, it's by oz.
