3rd Trimester

3D ultrasound question

I am 32 weeks and change. I was told by my radiology department that after 32 weeks it's too late to do an elective 3D ultrasound because the baby is very likely head down, and getting into position for birth. I googled it, and it can be done after 32 weeks, it just isn't as likely to come up with a better picture or something...

Has anyone had an elective 3D ultrasound done later than 32 weeks and have a good outcome? Thanks in advance!

  • Hi! I think you'll be OK at 32 weeks, that's the borderline of a good viewing and unpredictable viewing though - so huuuurry! I found this calendar to be super helpful:

We did ours at 27 weeks and it turned out pretty good, so the calendar seems accurate so far??

Good luck and enjoy the experience! I had a ton of friends coming up to me after seeing my 3D/4D ultrasound and said they wished they had done it too when they were pregnant. Some of them didn't because their friends had told them it was $200+.. but there are places that do it for $80-$115 which is pretty reasonable. Have fun! :)

    Thanks!

The place that would be doing it charges less than $200. I have been measuring behind in my three ultrasounds that I've had already, so maybe they'll get a good view? I'll have to call them again and ask more in depth questions.

  • I got mine done at a local college with an ultrasound department. They do regular ultrasounds for free and 3D for only 40 dollars. I would look into some ultrasound schools in your area if you don't want to spend the 200. I had mine done at 27 weeks and they came out really good. I would agree that you are at the borderline of a good viewing so get in there fast!

  • I just had my elective 3D ultrasound on Saturday and I was 32 wks, 4 days.  I was told up to 35 wks is fine.  Mine went great and we got awesome shots of our chubby little lady!  The DVD shows her yawning, moving, smiling, etc.  She is head down and did have her hands near her face a bit, but after moving me, her hands shifted.  So I had a great experience with it!  Don't be fooled by my ticker either, I think it says I am a week ahead of where I am.  I am currently 33 wks and 2 days.  GL!

  • The one I went to will do them up to 36 weeks. Although I have not done one that late, the pics I have seen of others are great! So neat catch a peak of your LO before they arrive.
  • The one thing I suggest is not to waste the money... I've been having ultrasounds every week since 28 weeks for BPP because I'm high risk. Well for about the last 3 weeks, she's been head down and if it wasn't her hand in her face then it was her feet.  They have their own little minds at that point and just don't want to cooperate as they used to haha. Plus not a whole lot of extra room to move around in there.
