Work Related:: Self Evaluation

Hey girls, I was handed a self evaluation form yesterday by my supervisor to fill out for our performance evaluations next week. As I'm reading through it I'm not sure exactly how to respond to several of the questions. I cannot stand my supervisor. I remain extremely professional with her, but quite honestly am on the verge of quitting because of her. I recently found out that I was highered to be the supervisor of my department but she threw a fit and basically demanded the position. So my question is, do I be completely honest on the evaluation (questions such as "Who has been most instrumental in mentoring your performance and development" and "In what ways do you feel your supervisor could better support your performance") and risk the backlash that would follow? Or do I put the PC answers and keep swallowing the bullsh!t she dishes?!?

  • I think you can be somewhat cautiously honest (if that makes sense).  I think it pays to put HR on notice a bit.  So the person most instrumental, etc. you can either point to someone outside your department or say "I have not yet found a mentor in the company and would be interested in talking to HR about any mentoring program offered."  In terms of what she can do to support your performance, "I would appreciate a greater opportunity to assume more responsibility in X projects, etc."  Quite frankly, kind of darned if you do and darned if you don't.

    I agree with you! I thought I'd be semi passive aggressive about it and basically make it known that she is a hurdle in my job, not a supporter, but not come right out and say it. Ugh.

  • Ou should probably remove your email address from your login name. You just never know what crazies will look for you on the web.
  • I know no one is a fan of the so called "dirty delete" but posting this under your real email, particularly if it's a work email, is risky.

    I agree you should answer "honestly" but keep it professional. Focus on what you've done and what you want next at the company. Don't say anything negative about your supervisor. I'd also consider whether there are positions in other departments you might be able to move into. Getting away from a toxic supervisor was the best thing I did at my last job.
