Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Tips for getting LO to hold bottle?

My girls are 8 month tomorrow (but adjusted age are barely 7 months).

They hold onto their bottle because we prop them but most times they only will hold it if there's only a little formula left. ANy recommendations on how to get them to hold their bottles w/out any propping needed?

  • Many babies never do. DS is 9.5 months and doesn't do it.

  • We bought sippy cups with handles. The nipple was interchangeable so we swapped it for a regular bottle nipple. After a while she was used to holding the handles and then switched to holding the bottle. We used Avent bottles and sippy cups. Also, we just let her be. We put her in her bouncer and handed her the bottle.

  • I think a lot of it has to do with the babe's personality.  We didn't have to do anything.  My LO just likes to do things herself.  Miss independent!  I would just suggest encouraging them by trying to place their hands on the bottle.  They will when they want to :-)
  • I just let it keep falling out of his mouth until her figured it out.
  • To be honest I know many are against bottle propping but thats how my daughter learned to hold her bottle. Whenever I propped she wanted to hold onto it and eventually she learned she could control how much she took in. I would just gently take her hands and place them around the bottle and from there she did it on her own. My next venture will be her sippy cup. But every baby is different and I think they have to actually want to hold it, if they have no interest dont worry it will come. Do they reach and grab for things? If so try putting their bottles in front of them and just see what happens, this may entice them to reach out for their bottles and explore.  It may get messy though, you could also try actually placing their hands on the bottle and gently guide it to their mouths or roleplay. You,mom, play baby and give a demonstration. May sound absurd but hey its worth a try lol.
