3rd Trimester

PUPPS/Cholestasis??

I've done some googling but didn't get any additional answers then what I got from the L&D doctor last night.

I was being seen for lack of baby movement... had an extremely high-stress 48 hours and was running on maybe 6 hours of total sleep and baby just stopped moving and tummy went soft.... She is doing super awesome now though. Took her some time to register movement on the monitors but her heartbeat was strong...

While there the doctor noticed I was itching my tummy alot and upon closer inspection found that my tummy was really red and had bumps on it.

They ran blood which doesn't come back for a few days but she said it could either be Pupps or Cholestasis... She did say that pupps was common and that they would have the pharmecy give me some cream to  help with the itch... but she didn't cover Cholestasis much besides saying that if the blood came back and I had it then my regular doctor would be notified that I need to be induced in 7/8 weeks. It was 2am in the morning when I got this news and my mind was still shocked from the stress of the weekend that I didn't even get to many other questions out.

Anyone have any insight?

  • Hello! Just wanted to say that I thought I had PUPP but then started itching EVERYWHERE, my fingers, ankles, tummy, thighs, butt, you name it. Today when I went to my doc she said that it could be Cholestasis, which she explained it was something you get from the baby pressing on your liver, so much so that it's not working properly and causing toxins to get into your bloodstream and making you itch.

  • There's another post on this few down that may be more helpful. If it is Colestasis they will give you something to take and if it doesn't help, they may induce early, eek! But they said the meds they give you usually do the trick.

  • I have cholestasis and it actually should be taken very seriously, so you need to follow up with your dr for sure.  Cholestasis doesn't have a rash associated with it.  It can have some red blotchy spots on your palms and bottoms of your feet and is worse at night.  You primarily have itching on palms, feet, legs, and some belly.  It's when your liver is producing too much bile.  I don't think it has anything to do with your baby lying on your liver-never heard that.  If it is cholestasis, your baby will need to be delivered by 38 weeks.  You will be put on a med to control the bile production and will have non-stress tests and biophysical profiles weekly or bi-weekly.  My dr takes it very seriously and it's really not very common, so hopefully that's not what you have.

PUPPS is pretty common and is associated with a rash.

With either condition, you can take benadryl.  However, with cholestasis, things like oatmeal baths seem to just aggravate the condition.  They help PUPPS though.

  • The last couple of weeks I have been EXTREMELY itchy.  Especially on my hands and feet and at night!  My dr's office called yesterday and said they wanted to see me today. I researched my symptoms and it sounds like it could be Cholestasis.  I'm going to at least bring it up with my dr if she doesn't. Kind of nervous about it!

  • I have PUPPPs and cream they prescribed isn't doing anything and it's spreading daily.  It started under my belly button, went up covering most of my belly, disappeared from under my belly button spread to my nuckles and in betweent my fingers, now is covering my whole hand and up to my elbows and arms and is starting to make an appearance on my legs. Absolute nightmare but is fairly common. Benadryl also hasn't worked for me. I've been caring arpund a towel soaked in cold water and it's been the best relief so far and keeps me from clawing my skin.
