Excel 2010

How do I format the cell so that it's exactly as I type it?  I need to have a cell with a six digit number that starts with zero and it keeps taking the zero away.  I haven't used Excel enough to know where it is now.

    right click the cell and go to the format section where you would format number and make it general I think and it will stay as you type.

    I was wrong. I just checked it. 

    Yep, format as text and you should be good to go.
