DD keeps getting stuck in crib slats. Need ideas.

Just got downstairs from the third time getting my DD unstuck from the crib slats this month.  She keeps trying to stick her arms and legs through when she throws everything out of her crib at nap time. Well this time she was screaming her "I am very hurt" cry and I could barely get her leg out. It has a huge bruise and scrape now. :-(  I don't know what to do. Isn't she too little for a toddler bed?  Should I get the mesh bumper?  Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • I don't know that a mesh bumper would help entirely since it wouldn't go all the way up the sides. Unless it's only happening when she's laying down, then it might. And I think we're getting closer to the point on this board where more and more LO's will be moving out of their cribs. Some want to keep them in there as long as possible, and understandably, but we plan to transition DD to a mattress on the floor in the next couple months so the crib will be free for the new baby. She's already napping on a cot at DC with no problems.

  • DS did this all the time (starting around 6 months) it is the reason we left the sleep sack on for so long, and we got a mesh bumper and "weaved" it in and out of each slat so he couldn't get stuck.  This has helped about 99% of the time, the other one percent he gets his leg up high enough to go over the bumper, however he can usually get it out, so he isn't truly stuck anymore.  We stopped the sleep sack around 8 months.  GL

  • Thanks ladies.  I really don't want to transition to a toddler bed yet.  She seems to only get stuck when she is done sleeping and starts playing.  But sometimes I don't know she is doing this.  Yesterday was so bad I thought she may have broken her leg because she wouldn't stand on it or move for a long time. I have bumpers that cover each slat, so maybe those with the mesh one weaving in and out will solve the problem. :-)
  • I know this isn't the answer people like, but we use a regular bumper to avoid this as well as the head bashing into the sides.  Technically she could lift an arm or a leg up above it but she hasn't so far.
