Caffeine, Allergy Medicine, Alcohol, etc.

I'm new here...so I apologize if this post is too "basic" but I would really like some reassurance. My DH and I are TTC and I'm concerned about when I need to stop some things that I've heard are no good when you're prego.  Obviously alcohol is a no no...but I saw some postings about "drinking till it's pink" and I'm guessing that as long as you're checking regularly to see if you're prego that it's probably safe to do that in moderation?  Is it the same for other things like caffeine, allergy medicine, etc.?

My other question is this...how come every article on "things to do before TTC" includes a visit to the doctor, but when I inquired about this a couple of times with my doctor I was told that they don't want to see me until after the BFP?

(Please be impressed with my use of acronyms...it took a lot of googling to figure them out) :)

oKAY, FOR me...  I drank 1 cup of coffee of 1 soda per day while PG.  I had a bad experience with DD1 and caffiene while nursing and had omitted it during her PG.

Allergy meds can elliminate your cervical mucas, so it is actually not recomeended to take while TTC.  It depends on what you are taking (I would see if you can take something that it OK while PG - my docs never OK-ed anything).

Alcohol, just track your cycle and take a test if you are late.  You can drink while TTC.

most doctors don't want to see you until after your KU'd.  I think the biggest exceptions are Dentists (mine won't see me now that I'm KU'd) and specialists (i.e. allergist, other medical conditions).

I had some additional testing with 2 of my 3 specialist prior to TTC, to make sure everything was alright to proceed.  Though neither of them were able to address my biggest concerns; were the medications I was currently on safe for TTC and baby.  I actually had to call a hotline to sort this out.

I was ok to continue with my allergy medication, but had to go off my RLS medication.  I think there are also medications that are not safe, so it depends on the brand.

As for caffine and alcohol - I consumed both prior ro my BFP.  But I had already started to try and ween myself off of both.  I have given both up during my pregnancy, by my choice (my sister still uses both in moderation).

I am really surprised that you dentist doesn't want to see you at all. My first appointment of the year was when I was 10 wks pg and my other one was right before I had DD.  Pregnant women are more susceptible to gum disease-your gums swell and trap food and become irritated much more easily during pregnancy.  The only difference was that I didn't get xrays last year.

Due to other medical issues, I require anti-biotics to see my dentist; its a high dose 1 hour before the appointment (6 tablets).  I'm assuming that my not seeing the dentist had a lot to do with subjecting myself and my baby to these anti-biotics.

I already got the lecture from my dentist to floss more and take better care of my teeth.

I think the comment about 'visit your dr' refers to seeing your general practitioner for a standard health physical.  I think most adults don't go very regularly to get a physical, I think that's what that means just to get a clean bill of health from the them, and/or address any possible health concerns before you get pg.  Also the dentist.  You can't have x-rays when pg if those are out of date.

Outside of allergy meds (I'm unsure), I think everything else is find in moderation.  You just want an overall healthy lifestyle, so if you like a glass of wine with dinner, go for it.  I still drink 1 cup of coffee each morning.  Keep exercising, sleeping, eating right, etc.  And be sure to take pre-natal vitamins daily now if you are TTC.

You can prep your body for pregnancy by eating healthy, exercising, etc. You don't need to cut out the occasional drink, cup of coffee or allergy medicine BEFORE you are pregnant!

Allergy medicine depends on your doctor.  I see an allergist and receive allergy shots. I told my doctor we were TTC and she switched my medication to Category B safe (supposed to be okay for pregnancy).  They continued increasing my dosage for shots until I received my BFP.  I still get my shots but it stays at the same dosage.  There is no way I could handle not getting my shots nor taking my medicine.

On a side note for allergies, my doctor told me of pregnant women who suffer from allergies, during the pregnancy, 1/3 of women's allergies get worse, 1/3 stay the same, 1/3 gets better.
