C-sections

Choosing a C-Section (Advice)

I'm currently 20 weeks expecting our 2nd child. My first child I had an emergency C-section after almost 24 hours of labor with no drugs. Water broke on my own...progressed to 8cm and the baby wouldn't come out. She was hitting her head on my pelvic bone and couldnt fit through. Very painful and awful.

Now for my second I have the choice of planning a C-section. I'm a little nervous about both sides. My mother has 3 children all she tried to have naturally and all ended up in C-sections. My doctor wonders if i inherited an odd shaped pelvic which inhibits natural birth.

What do you ladies think?? I almost want to plan my C-section because my first was such an awful experience. But my first c-section didn't go well. The recovery was bad, I felt cheated, and the surgery itself was even awful. I hear its much better when its planned. But I also worry about trying a VBAC and going through the same awful experience.

Thoughts to anyone who has been here??? Any advice would help.

Re: Choosing a C-Section (Advice)

  • My OB & delivery hospital do not allow VBAC, so this LO will be a repeat c/s.  DS was a scheduled c/s for several medical concerns (thankfully he's perfectly healthy), and the recovery was a breeze.  It was *so* easy that I actually prefer the idea of the RCS to a VBAC b/c I know what to expect, and I don't think it will be *that* difficult to care for DS and the new LO.

If the reason for your c/s was that your LO got stuck, I would definitely be concerned about ending up in an emergent c/s situation again.  I'd probably schedule the c/s, but perhaps talk to the doc about the possibility of trying a VBAC if I went into labor on my own before the scheduled date & was progressing well.

  • I prefer a RCS over VBAC. I had emergency csection with my 1 st due to pre- e at 30 weeks and a RCS with my 2nd at 39 weeks. Both were easy recoveries but completely different expierenced. The ECS was rushed and there were 20 people in the room. RCS was so laid back only 4 people in the room. Dr took his time. I remember thinking what the heck can they possibly be doing that's taking so long. Lol. Of we have another baby ill do another RCS.

I'm curious to see responses. I just had my first that ended up with a c section after a scary drop in heart rate. Before I would have told you I'd do a RCS because Of the risks of doing VBAC, but after doing the recovery I couldn't image trying to do that with a newborn AND another young child to care for.

There isn't a huge difference in risk between a RCS or a VBAC, both are reasonable options.

OP, I pushed for 4+ hours with my first before having a c/s. I had a successful VBAC with my second. Talk to your provider, and maybe consider getting a second opinion from someone else, usually advice about VBAC really depends on the provider.

  • It's only a decision that you can make, but personally I would go for a RSC and will most likely go for that if/when we have another child.  Granted my issue was different - in spite of going through two inductions, absolutely nothing happened in the way of getting me into labor and finally at induction #2 which took place at 41.5 weeks, I said enough is enough and had a CS.  But following the same logic, I have little to no interest in getting induced again, or even going to 41.5 weeks - both were pretty darn miserable.  My recovery was great as far as I am concerned and I think I was truly physically incapacitated for only 5-6 days.  I didn't dialate at all and didn't push, so I think that contributed to the ease of recovery and obviously would be a selling point for electing a CS the next time.  Good luck with your decision.
