Metformin and Breast Feeding

Just wondering if anyone is on Metformin and was on Metformin before pregnancy and is planning to breast feed.  My endocrinologist says that she is going to cut my dosage in 1/2 if Im going to breastfeed.  Just looking for more info. / input on the topic.  Thanks.

My sources say metformin is an L2. It's excreted in small amounts into breast milk. Caution should be used in preemies. So if the benefits outweigh the risks for you, go ahead and take it while BFing.

I'm not sure, but this stuff is why my dr only uses insulin...skips right over met.

I think it's likely just fine though.

I actually just saw my Endo about this yesterday. He said that I am to take my last dose the night before my induction. He said that there are studies out there that show it is safe but they are really small and most studies are on animals so he just isn't comfortable keeping me on it. He said that once I give birth that the GD will improve and if for some reason it takes a while for my BS to regulate that he will put me on insulin instead. Just one doctor's opinion though...

I had a doctor pushing metformin on me and I refused it, knowing that there's not enough research done yet.  I refused to have DS be a guinea pig!  I wound up taking Lantus and did great on it.

I was on Met pre-pregnancy and am currently still on it and several other medications.  My OB gave me the go ahead to attempt breast feeding when the time comes with no current plans to alter my dosages, but we'll be monitoring the baby closely just in case.
