Food Allergy

What to look for...

So, I need some help.  I had another doctors visit today for my DD (she had a 9 month wellness checkup, but also had a virus for the last 2 days with 104 temp :(, so was a check for that as well )  So, I asked again if her low eating of her bottles and her lack of interest in table foods/purees could be related to food allergies/EoE, and I got a response that she would have blood in her stool, hives, eczema, vomiting, trouble breathing.  She has none of these (that I know of- I guess I should say, no visible blood in stool, just very mucusy).  She is only eating (on a good day) 12-20 oz of food.  She lost 1 lb (which equated to 20 percentile points!, so I am freaking out right now).  I went on the elimination diet 2 weeks ago, and her stools are looking more peanut buttery (and, she will take a VERY small amount of table food- like one small fingernail size bit of chicken or pork, or rice-based spaghetti).  She will always take a little of the table foods, but then become uninterested/pissed off to have anymore.  It is like she is exploring what they are, and once she figures out she is to eat them, she wants nothing to do with them.

So, I know that there could be blood in her stool that we don't see, but realistically, does this sound like it has anything to do with a food allergy?  She doesn't seem to differ with eating habits with me going on elimination diet- just poops seem less mucusy (but, could that be from the small amount of table foods she is getting?).

If we get allergy testing done now, at 9 months old, will they just do the blood testing, or the whole works?

Thanks in advance for the help!  I am very distraught that she is losing weight, and hope that it is just due to the illness.  I just wonder why she is sick all of the time, along with the lack of interest in eating.

:)

Re: What to look for...

  • we had blood in the stool, both visible & invisible. they can simply test the diaper for hidden blood if you ask them to. when we did the allergy testing, they did a scratch test for the top 8. it was very easy. they are going to do bloodwork at her one year appointment b/c they will normally draw blood at that time.

Thank you!  Did you have this done at the Ped, or Allergist?  How old was DD when you had her scratch test done, if you don't mind me asking?  Do you take the last poopy diaper in?  How do we do that (sorry, for TMI)  :)

  • the diaper was tested at the pedi office, we just brought in the diaper in- yes the last poopy one. i would just bring in the whole diaper in a plastic bag. they have tested it multiple times for us.

the scratch was done at about 6 months at an allergist office. sometimes they don't like to do the allergy testing at a young age b/c it isn't always accurate.
