In the news: Calif. Woman Tries to Steal Newborn

Anyone see this news story?  https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/police-woman-dressed-nurse-steal-baby-16943637#.UCEbR_X-aQE

"A woman disguised in scrubs was caught trying to steal a newborn girl from a Southern California hospital in a tote bag after sensors attached to the baby alerted employees, Garden Grove police said. ...

Ramirez is accused of posing as a nurse who came into the room of the baby's mother and told her to take a shower before a doctor came to examine her, Nightengale said.

Once the baby's mother was out of the room, Ramirez allegedly put the newborn in a purple tie-dyed tote bag and tried to carry her out of the ward.

"An alarm went off when the baby crossed an imaginary line" in the hospital that set off a sensor, Nightengale said."

Thank God for those electronic wristbands.  How traumatizing!  I'm pretty sure if I were the mother involved, I would not let LO out of my arms for the next 3 or 4 years.

  • I remember thinking how crazy it was to have all of these sensors and multiple bracelets, having to check the bracelets multiple times a day, etc.  But this nutjob is the reason all of that is necessary.
  • That is super scary.  Poor mama!!

This. And even with the sensors I was still paranoid. Nutjobs like this just back up that paranoia. Thank God for the sensors.

  • Scary.

What scared me is I don't think my kids had those on while they were in the NICU.  There was extra security to get in, but it still scared me. Especially after DS came home and DD had to share a room.

  • That is scary.  At our hospital, LO's sensor was attached to his cord clamp.  Kind of gross and annoying,  but I was glad it was there.  He had a bracelet too, but I don't know if it had the sensor in it.

And done!  I was going to PIP something awesome, but then I got called in on a conference call.  Don't these people realize that I've got important things to do?

No, that's okay, I just got kind of hot all over and reached for my phone. They are used to me calling at this point, one more is nothing ;)

    How's he doing?

Really good, IV came out last night. He lost a little weight, but is eating great, so I'm hoping he'll be home tomorrow (maybe even today, but that's probably being overly optimistic. Tomorrow might even be pushing it, but we're in the home stretch.)

That's so great to hear - eating well is a big deal.  I hope the next day or so goes by quickly.

  • I know I belong on TB when the part of the article I zeroed in on was when the baby crossed the "imaginary line".  It's not imaginary, it's invisible.  Duh.
