Cloth Diapering

Talk to me about Flips

I am going to a diaper swap next week and I need about 6 diapers.  I bought some used fuzzibunz and bumgenius and they are really at the end of their life, the elastic is shot.

I was planning on buying 4 small fuzzibunz because we've had good luck with them, but now I am wondering about Flips.  Do they work as newborn covers because they are OS?  I need more covers for my NB stash so that might let them work double duty in the future.  Also, are they a good nighttime diaper? Do how do the inserts stay put, can I use any of the inserts I currently have or will I need different ones?  Are they daycare friendly?  Like I said, lots of questions, tell me how you use them and how they've worked for you.

 TIA

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I like my Flips a lot and use them over prefolds.  I like that they are pretty wide in the crotch so that it is easy to cover the prefold.  Can't say if they are daycare friendly since she doesn't go to daycare.  You could use them overnight if you had a fitted overnight diaper.  Our flips started fitting around 8-9lbs so they didn't fit for the first month or a bit more.

I loved the Flip Shell as a prefold/fitted cover.  This worked for the first 6-8 months, then they just wouldn't fit well over any thing but the flip insert (however DS is a big boy).  I still like the Flip with the flip insert as an on the go diaper as they are trim and don't take up a lot of room in the diaper bag.  They inserts however  don't stay in place well for us.  This doesn't matter for a pee diaper however even with fully solid poos it gets in the cover every time.  So I only use them when I am pretty sure DS won't poo.  For this reason I think AIO or pockets are much better for day care.

  • I have Flips and use them with the Flips inserts (both kinds) as well as with regular prefolds. So if you have prefolds or non-microfiber inserts, you can use the Flips covers with them. The inserts stay put just fine, though I sometimes snappi my prefolds. I find that they are too trim to use over my WAHM fitteds.

DD is a heavier wetter, but we've gotten by overnight by layering a Flip organic under a Flip staydry insert. The inserts were soaked, but no leaks.

While I've heard some people use them on their newborns, Flips would not have fit DD as a newborn and she is a medium-to-large baby. They are very wide in the crotch. I didn't start using them until about 8-10 weeks (but I had a decent stash of nb and S covers, so I didn't really try before then). If you're looking for an inexpensive NB cover, I recommend Proraps Newborn size.

It really depends on your daycare. Some DCs require that the entire diaper & cover be changed each time. If that is the case with your provider, then it would be better to go with pockets or AIOs since you would not be able to take advantage of reusing the cover with Flips.

  • We started cloth diapering when DS turned a month old. We used Flips right away with prefolds and the stay-dry inserts, and they fit wonderfully on the smallest snapped setting. He may have been able to wear them sooner even. He was around 11ish lbs. at 1 month I think, so not a small baby. They may not fit a newborn very well right off the bat.

  • We use Flip covers, but not the inserts.  At first, we used prefolds with snappis, and they worked great.  But then, we came into someone's handmedown stash of some fitted diapers, and found that they were terrific with the small size fitteds, but the next size up is harder to stuff in there.  This is also true of the one GroVia one-size cover we have, and I talked about it with the owners of our local store who's also a CD veteran and she said that this is typical for all one-size diapers.  But they were terrific with the prefolds.  And we do still used them, even with the fitteds.

  • We use fuzzibunz inserts with fleece liners inside flip covers because we have an insane number of inserts. It works really well.
