Infants and Thyroid Issues

Hi,

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right spot or not, so I'm sorry if I'm not. I was wondering if anyone has dealt with an infant with possible thyroid issues? My little man is 8 months old and his thyroid test came back elevated but they won't tell me anymore than that and I can't get him into a pedi endo for 6 weeks! I'm already worried about him being behind devolopmentally and now I have to wait! I welcome any and all advice or questions.

Thanks!

Re: Infants and Thyroid Issues

  • I have thyroid issues, not my son, but whenever I have a hard time getting in with my endo I just talk to my primary doc. So my advice would be to ask your pediatrician about it, tell them that you can't get in with the endo for 6 weeks, and see if there is anything that needs to be done right away to prevent any developmental issues. I'm sure they will understand and help you out. Good luck!

  • Ds was born with an elevated TSH, so he is treated with a low dose of synthroid and gets blood work every 3 months as an infant and 6 as a toddler until age 2 when they will wean him off to see if he truly needs it. They dont feel he does and that it was likely elevated at birth b/c i also have hypothyroidism and he had a stressful in utero experience, but because it's so critical for brain development they leave him on until 2 and check his levels throughout regardless. So on that note, your child needs to be treated ASAP and if the endo is taking 6 weeks then your ped needs to have a phone consult and either get you in sooner or give you meds you need to start treating prior to that appt, especially b/c then you can see if it's the right dose (assuming this is hypo and not hyper, right??). Also, in general you'll have more luck with questions like this on the special needs board, which we frequent and love.
