Babies: 3 - 6 Months

calcified hematoma on baby's head

My 5 month old has a calcified hematoma on the back of his head.  He was born with a bruise from the difficult labor (no vaccuum or forceps) and the doctor is saying it has calcified at this point.  Has anyone experienced this?  Does the bump go away ever?  The head shape on that side is also a little flat and pointy.  We are going to a pediatric neurosurgeon next week to get her opinion.

Re: calcified hematoma on baby's head

  • DS has one, too--his is from having a vacuum assist during delivery. Our pedi says that he's seen several and they're usually all gone by a year. He's not at all concerned, and I trust him, so I'm trying not to be too worried either.

  • Our delivery was very fast and our baby had a calcified hematoma also. It finally went away around the 5/6 month mark, but it took forever. Our pediatrician acted like it was normal also and said it just takes a long time to go down. :)
  • My son still has his at 3.5 months. He was stuck in the birth canal and I was pushing really hard so his was quite large but it's really getting much better although you can still see it. We already saw a neurosurgeon to have it checked out and she said it should probably be completely gone by 6 months. There is a laser procedure for children that have extreme cases.
