1st Trimester

Got BFP day after accepting new job: obligation?

Hey all, I accepted a new job on Monday (a senior position), and then Tuesday, I got a very clearly positive HPT.  It put all the symptoms I've been having in context, and today I took a second test, also positive, so I'm 100% certain that I am preggers. Hubby and I plan to do the usual don't-tell-anyone-till-2nd-trimester deal, but I feel a little awkward about my new employer, since obviously he didn't bargain on my being out for maternity leave in 8 months.  While he seems nice and supportive of families and I feel confident I can do a kick-ass job in this role, I'm still a little uncertain as to when and how I should let him know about the pregnancy.

So, what would you do?

  • You should not feel obligated to tell.  Get in there, do a kicka$$ job, and tell them when the time is right.  You will probably have a better idea of what your maternity time might look like at that point if you don't know right now.

  • I'm actually in the EXACT same position.  I found out I was pregnant the day after I accepted a new job as well.  I had planned on waiting until the end of my first trimester to tell him but because it's a teaching position I plan to tell in the next couple of weeks so we both have time to plan before the school year starts.  Congrats on the new job!  I definitely don't think you should obligated to tell.

  • Thanks. :)  It's nice to know I'm not the only one.  The only unique aspect of the position here is that the median age at the company is SO young that I will likely be the only woman there with a child, so I don't even know if anyone's ever had to go on maternity leave there before.  I just have to be EXTRA-awesome in the meantime, I guess!

  • I would be nervous too, but you shouldn't be.  Your boss knew when hiring a married woman that there is a chance you would be out on maternity leave in the future.  I think you should wait so that being pregnant isn't everyone's first impression of you on the job.  Plus, by waiting you have over 2 months to show them how great you are.  Once you tell them, you've got even more months to get everything in order before you're out.

  • You're under no obligation to tell. Hopefully you'll keep your energy up for when you're at work so you can get through the day and do that kick-ass job and then tell after 12 weeks. If in any case you need time off for dr appointments and you fear it'll get in the way of doing a kick ass job, you can tell him, but unless he's monitoring your every move (which I doubt if you're in a senior position) then I'm sure you can get around your day just fine.

  • I wound up changing grades at the end of last year (I'm a teacher too.)  I did know I was pregnant, but chose not to tell anyone, as I had many complications (bleeding, blood pressure, etc.) and we weren't 100% sure that this would stick.  Well, here we are, at close to 13 weeks and so far we have a sticky baby!  I plan on "coming out" when we return to work in a few weeks.

But, FYI, you are under NO obligation to tell anyone until you are ready.  Do the kick ass job they hired you for and nobody will be able to say a word!!
