NBR- Kindle

So I've finally decided to break down and buy a Kindle, which I've wanted to do FOREVER!! I'm torn between the Kindle Fire and the Kindle 3G Touch. If you have either of these tell me why you love it!.... or hate it! I already have an iPhone so I'm not super crazy about the apps on the Fire, but I do plan to read a lot and figured my husband could watch movies on it when we do road trips if I got it. Tell me what you think!

Re: NBR- Kindle

  • I have the Fire and I love it except for one thing.  I have to log on to a wi-fi any time I want to download anything.  So whereas before, I could download books anywhere anytime, now I have to connect.

Small complaint, but satill there.  Otherwise it is wonderful!!

  • Warning: I'm a book geek.

I have the Kindle 2 (E-ink, not touch.) Kindle Fire, and the Nook Color.

Honestly, my favorite is the Kindle 2. You really need to ask yourself, what will you do with your kindle? My DH uses the Kindle Fire exclusively now, but all he does is read on it, which is a waste of money, IMO.

If you want apps, play games, browse internet, then a tablet-y type of e-reader is best for you.

The Kindle 2 is smaller and easier to hold than the nook color, and the e-ink is a lot easier on the eyes.  The kindle fire is a weird size, IMO.

So, my first recommendation is decide what your main purpose is. If you have a smart phone, I would try to stay away from the fire, since it is more expensive and you already have something that will do all that the fire will. Then, go to a store like best buy, and hold the different types. Sometimes one ereader just feels better.

    AND I'm done. lol.

  • For the longest time, I hate the idea of Kindles and Nooks. I thought they were the death of the book store and I didn't want to read anything that didn't have that "book smell."

Okay, so kindles and nooks really are the death of the book store, but I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas this year and I LOVE IT. You can get magazine subscriptions sent right to your kindle. The wifi thing doesn't bother me because I'm typically around wifi when I want to buy/download a book anyway.

I have a few movies on there as well which is nice for long trips. And a few games, but I mostly use it for reading. PLUS.. if you are a member of Amazon Prime you get the Lending Library for free, which means you can "check out" one book a month for free out of their library.

  • I was gifted the basic kindle and I love it. I would think, if you already have an iPhone, then you wouldn't "need" the Fire and the 3G touch would be sufficient.

    Enjoy!

  • I have the 3G keyboard (similar to the 3G Touch, just with a keyboard).

Personally, the pros for me are:  I prefer the e-ink for reading.  I feel like the Fire is closer to my laptop screen (color display, back lit like a laptop, etc.) and after spending all day looking at my laptop, I don't want to spend more time at night looking at something similar.  Also, if you're reading out in sunlight (I often read outside), there's NO glare from the e-ink and it's awesome even with sunglasses on.  Also, unlike the Fire, it connects to Whispernet, so I can download new books poolside.

And the cons:  It's black & white e-ink -- If you were downloading childrens books with pictures for your LO, it would be a bust in my opinion (I have a friend that also bought a Fire for that purpose).  Also, there aren't the cool apps.  Like you, I have an iPhone for apps and a laptop for other stuff, so I just use it for reading, but I am a bit of a techie gadget lover, so... Also, it's not back-lit -- If you're reading in bed, you have to have another light on (like you would a paper book).

Good luck - Hope you love it too :)

Edit: I don't think that most of my cons are really cons... I love my Kindle.  But, they're things to think about if you're deciding between the two.  It kind of comes back to what you're really going to use it for (reading normal books that you'd otherwise get in paperback, reading books with pictures, reading at night in a dark room, reading in sunlight, etc.).

This.  I have a Kindle 2 that I bought in 2009 for a deployment to Antarctica.  I use it to read.  I would never buy a Kindle Fire or Nook or "touch" or whatever.  An e-reader is for reading, in my opinion.  If you're not going to read on it, buy an iPad.

  • I have Kindle Fire and it is a lifesaver. I got it for myself but I end up bringing it with me everywhere for my 2 yr old. He loves to watch episodes of Elmo, Dora, etc.. and play games on it. I also enjoy reading and watching movies on it. I haven't tried anything else but for the money, this is really good.

I had an older Kindle... now I have an ipad with the kindle app on it. I like it better than the others because I can do anything and everything on my ipad.
