Tell me about Westchester

Schools, neighborhoods etc.

We are new to the area and are currently renting in Downers Grove. While we love it here, the commute is a bit much for my H. (The metra is not an option for him.) I found a house that I love in Westchester but know nothing about it. All the areas on the map around it have been recommended to us (Oakbrook, N. Riverside, LaGrange etc) but not Westchester.

Tell me the good, the bad and the ugly! Go!

Thank you-- that is what I suspected as my parents (who live in the southern part of the state) had heard of the Catholic schools in the area, but not the public. Plus, I thought there had to be a reason the houses seemed more affordable than LaGrange and Riverside (my 2 faves!)

I agree.

 

I think the elementary school is okay, but the high school (Proviso) is terrible. 

 

Western Springs, LaGrange, LaGrange Park, and Brookfield have better schools, and are just a town or two over.  Brookfield and LaGrange Park definitely have a range of price points.
