Advice for burping?

I would like to hear how everyone burps their LOs. I am looking for other techniques to try with DD since I can rarely get her to burp after a feeding and doubt that as a FTM that her latch could be good enough not to be getting some air. I have been burping her on my shoulder and patting her on the back. I am pretty sure that she also has heart burn. We are having that check out at the pedi this week. Is there any method that is better for burping with

Can you burp too long and cause more air bubbles?

Is there any method that is better for burping when LO has heart burn?

What methods do you guys use that you have found to be effective?

 Thanks

Re: Advice for burping?

  • I would love to hear this advice, too! I use the over-the-shoulder method mostly, but my mom is also good at getting out bubbles by gently bouncing him in her arms, rocking him from side to side (like leaning him way to his left, then to his right, fairly slowly). My husband also burps him in a sitting position sometimes, with one hand on his chest and supporting the chin and the other patting the back. I am also concerned about reflux, so I will be anxious to see what other momma's advise.

  • I don't know about the reflux but I burp my LO two ways. Sometimes I do over the shoulder. If that doesn't work, I move him so he's sitting on my lap. I put my hand over his chest to hold him up and his chin rests on top of my hand. Then pat his back.

Usually the sitting up on the lap way works better for my LO. Sometimes even just changing the positions will get the burp to come out.

  • Now that DD's neck is stronger I will lightly bounce her up and down on my knee, making sure to support her neck.  This worked with DS and it is working with her too.  I figure I need to sort of jar the air out of her.

I've also used this method and found it to be very effective if the over the shoulder method doesn't work.

PP, I've also just rubbed their backs from their bum up toward their shoulders and that, too, can really help the burps come out if patting isn't working.

this, but  sometimes she just spits up. I also do a modified shoulder burp by having her against my chest. It is more gentle. I saw it on youtube.

  • I use the traditional shoulder and sitting in my lap but when DS has really stubborn gas I will lay him across my lap and rock my legs side to side while I rub or lightly pat his back. Usually results and in a VERY juicy burp so have a spit rag handy but never seems to fail for those really stubborn burps.

Also if you feel like you've been burping him forever on your shoulder use both hands to support him and just lay him down on his back for a 15 count then return him to your shoulder. Sometimes just the change from being vertical to horizontal and back will dislodge that stubborn gas.
